There are very few baby books that 1. are available in board book format, 2. have rhyme and rhythm, and 3. aren't absolutely awful at rhyme and rhythm. This is, like, basically all of them:

I've seen a couple versions of this joke but like, I dunno, would he? Or would he find it impressive and inspiring that the Pope gets exactly one vote, just like you and me and every farmer and fishmonger and phlebotomist at the polls?
If you showed this to a Massachusetts puritan from the 1700s he would kill himself

Baby produced his first improper generalization the other day: he said that some mice in a picture book were "runawaying". I'm very proud
3yo said "I amn't" instead of "I'm not". I love this age where kids are recognizing grammatical patterns and applying them more consistently than the English language actually allows.

My feud with the local librarian who never lets my toddler do anything has reached a new low: she wouldn't let him QUIETLY AND GENTLY LOOK AT A BOOK under my direct supervision, because it was a book for adults, and so "playing" with it was not always allowed. 😡

He likes to flip through and mutter "words on dis page", and maybe find an author photo. Since when is this a crime!!!

On this day in 1847: The student body of Geneva Medical College unanimously votes to allow Elizabeth Blackwell to enroll, and promises that "no conduct of ours shall cause her to regret her attendance at this institution."

Elizabeth Blackwell was of course the first woman in America (or the UK, where she was born) to earn a medical degree

A 1.5-year-old's review of the latest @WorksInProgMag: "Bird eating this." "Words on that page." "House." [front view of the Pantheon] "Lying down. Make a big mess." [Victorian elites playing rugby] "The end!" "Read it again."

From an 1889 paper about infant mortality: "On no ground other than selfishness can the practice be defended of sending children, who are expected to die, out of an institution so that the published death rate of the institution shall be small." The more things change...
The problem with hospital quality metrics is that it’s much easier to game them than it is to fix them, and gaming them is often harmful. E.g., it’s easier to reduce average length of stay by admitting people who never needed to be admitted (vs safely discharging people sooner).

pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article… It continues "Such action does not prevent death, but often accelerates it." Yeah no kidding!

Breaking news, there is a FIFTH playground within a mile of us that I somehow didn't know about until just now. Embarrassing tbh
Replying to @maiab
I wouldn't go so far as to say I don't need a stroller, but yeah it's awesome having a playground 0.2 miles away. And 0.3 miles, and 0.6 miles, and 0.8 miles...

Plus there are three more that are right around the 1 mile mark, so fair to say a total of eight within a mile. A good place to be a toddler!

My baby has already learned to say "bird" instead of "caw caw", "carousel" instead of "round and round", and "Waymo™" instead of "talking car". They grow up so fast 🥲

sci-fi society where people feel entitled not just to wealth and not just to a positive derivative of wealth over time but also a positive second derivative, and they're furious when their economy grows 10% for the third year in a row

Happy to report that we have a train toddler! Happy for me, I mean, because the history of transportation and steam power and industrialization and supply chains are more interesting than dinosaurs These are our favorite train books so far, I recommend them all:

The red one, bought secondhand with no dust jacket, is Train by Elisha Cooper

Honorable mention to Locomotive by Brian Floca. The language is just too flowery and overwritten for me to have it around all the time, but it is very beautiful and informative!
