"Architects and other professionals are taught to identify first and foremost with their job; it’s a great tool of capitalism to alienate us from our lives and make us servile to nothing other than profit for someone else."

Another rebranding🤬Nestlé's ditch its iconic logo that beautifully conveyed the brand's values such as child labor, illegal water-pumping, infested food products & disinformation. Clearly the work of an intern who doesn't have a clue about the most basic rules of type design! 😱

this current thing in design discourse where they adopt marxist phrases to actually *suppress* class consciousness, i.e. we’re all just like "the creative class", or referring to other designers as "comrades" when no one is actually socialist or organized

For the record this is why I've disassociated from the design class. They view every problem as a "design challenge" and their solutions too often look like this—useless graphic design exercises made for themselves, for the purpose of creating Good Design that wins design awards

While generative AI presents the best possible case against tying an important innovation to capitalist dynamics, Silicon Valley's cultural hegemony will make us to draw the exact opposite conclusion, i.e. that generative AI shows that capitalism & tech progress are inseparable🧵

Ève Chiapello’s historical analysis of "artist critique" and its commercial adoption perfectly describes the ideology behind Critical Design & Designer As Author, which is "aristocratic in nature" and "does not allow for any critique of (…) society in the name of solidarity"

☝️ you don’t hate people copying your work, you hate being stuck in a competitive economy that requires them to do it, as well as it leads you to believe you should somehow own ideas
