Honored to be in a roundtable discussion with @HHSGov @HHS_ASPE @CMSGov on the 2026 Kidney Care National Plan Kidney disease is the epitome of stagnant, monopolized health care from overregulation and inadequate attention to upstream, chronic disease prevention. Americans deserve better. Thank you @SecKennedy for making this a priority!

I was incredibly encouraged at @ASNKidney #KidneyWk with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the kidney community on @HHSGov Kidney Care National Plan (Link here: aspe.hhs.gov/reports/kidney-…) The consensus reaction I received from this plan is that kidney care is stagnant and needs to be revitalized throughout the entire spectrum of kidney disease, from promoting screening efforts and preventive strategies, fostering more competition in the dialysis market, and continuing the critical reform efforts for transplantation. Everyone also agreed that streamlining regulations would boost innovation by industry and that we should be promoting patient health over financial and regulatory engineering. I had a blast at Thursday's fireside chat between @samirparikhmd , @AbeSutton , moderated by @KidneySW . I am so grateful to @TodIbrahim , Rachel Meyer, and Dr. Watnick for making this incredibly well attended session happen, despite very little notice! I was also honored to have a role in introducing this important policy. Also many thanks to Tom Duvall for his key role in developing the policy and also for playing a key role in many q/a sessions at the conference. I am optimistic that the kidney community will be able to come together and work with the government on making this vision a reality. Grateful as always for the continued support from @GeBaiDC , @HHS_ASPE , and @CMSGov . Also thanks to Miriam Applbaum for her leadership in ensuring that this policy could be finalized and announced before Kidney Week! Proud to be part of @USCSchaeffer and @KeckMedicineUSC , which supported me and the research that made a lot of this possible

Honored to be included in this @HHSGov roundtable on the Kidney Care National Plan with @SecKennedy I’m highly encouraged that this plan prioritizes American Health and revitalizing kidney care markets! @GeBaiDC @HHS_ASPE @AbeSutton @CMSinnovates
This week, @SecKennedy visited @JPS_Health in Fort Worth, TX, to mark National Kidney Week and announce HHS's new Kidney Care National Plan. With an estimated 37 million American adults living with kidney disease, the plan puts prevention first by focusing on earlier detection, expanding treatment options, improving dialysis care, and increasing access to kidney transplants. During his visit, Secretary Kennedy also joined healthcare leaders for a roundtable discussion on improving kidney care and chronic disease management.

💡NEW BRIEF: Restoring vibrancy in kidney care, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing costs, requires thoughtfully reviewing and modernizing the regulatory framework governing kidney care to better encourage competition, innovation, and patient-centered care.

Engaging session. Lots of great thoughts. @AbeSutton @eugelin06 Loved perspective from large pvt practices. Labs need to make their way to CMS! Engage prime care. Make the numbers work. Realize that the clinical benefits of the plan will be seen not at month 12, but at year 5/10.

One time, I went to school for a year and a half of full-time Chinese study and came away speaking Chinese. I would say this made me learn Chinese, but since Freddie deBoer taught me that education doesn't work, I now understand that I was always going to have learned Chinese.

lol exactly The most damaging worldview espoused by socialists is that everything is zero sum. This is why they are infatuated with relative rank. It’s why they push absurd interventions like stop teaching algebra in 8th grade

A week later, I'm still thinking about NHJ's article on NYC schools. It was courageous but a huge missed opportunity to call for real reform. She blames school choice, inequality, segregation, the wealthy and herself. But she seems reluctant to criticize the actors and policies implicated by the failures she documents, perhaps because those conclusions would be uncomfortable for many of her ideological allies. - She describes absentee teachers, poor instruction, unresponsive administrators, and students who graduate without mastering the material. But she never calls for greater accountability at the district, school, principal, and teacher levels. - She documents teachers failing to fulfill basic responsibilities but doesn't explore whether tenure and other employment protections allow chronic teacher absenteeism and poor performance to persist. - She laments the concentration of disadvantaged students but doesn't consider whether NYCPS should consolidate under-enrolled schools, thus allowing more resources towards instruction and increasing socioeconomic diversity. - She describes her daughter earning As in honors classes despite substantial gaps in her knowledge. Yet she doesn't consider the value of standardized testing as a check on grade inflation and identifying learning gaps before they compound. - She describes how experienced teachers choose to work in better schools but doesn't salute the districts that have had “reform superintendents” like DC, Dallas, Denver, and Houston that have used cash bonuses to incentivize the best teachers to work in the most disadvantaged schools. - She notes that eliminating homework harmed her daughter, but doesn't examine how the movement against homework is largely driven by equity advocates who argue that it can turn unequal home circumstances into unequal academic outcomes. - She condemns school choice yet uses it to secure a better school fit for her daughter, without noting it’s the only realistic escape valve for families who can’t move or afford private school. - She describes the “impossible balancing act” of teaching students at vastly different levels but doesn't explore how academic tracking can help students at both ends of the academic spectrum. - She describes disruptive students who harm the classroom environment but doesn’t ask for stronger disciplinary actions to protect other students. - She documents a school that lowered academic expectations in pursuit of equity but doesn't acknowledge how doing so perpetuates the very achievement gaps those policies seek to eliminate. Hannah-Jones’ story was powerful. She supplied the evidence for a broad examination of why schools are failing disadvantaged students. It could have been the strongest call in a generation for urban school district reform. Segregation and poverty are real obstacles. But they cannot become explanations that absolve everyone else of responsibility. We can’t wait to solve all societal issues before demanding higher performing schools.
