ALT May Is Missing Murdered Indigenous Women/Peoples Awareness Month (MMIW/P). Native American women face murder rates more than ten times the national average. These disappearances and murders are directly linked to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sex trafficking. These crimes are most often committed by individuals from outside of indigenous communities and often go uninvestigated by law enforcement officials. Murder is the third leading cause of death for Native American women and girls according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control. 56.1% have experienced sexual violence, 55.5% have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner, and 48.8% have experienced stalking, according to the National Institute of Justice.
