Why I hate the fine tuning argument. A 🧵: 1. the parameters people take to be FTed are scale-dependent couplings, not timeless metaphysical dials. The theory in which they live is an effective theory. We have no idea what the fundamental theory is, or what its parameters are.

9. people sometimes then push back, but Eric, you cant do any science at all without some objective priors. Buts its a totally different thing to claim there's some magic prior or set of priors in the sky, and another to be indifferentists about this made up parameter space.

I wrote a short substack about my forthcoming book *Science without Deference*. I'm hoping to keep a series of these going until the book comes out (probably in a year, lol).

A lot of antiwar stuff, especially film, ends up trading on the aesthetics of war. Why would you use ride of the valkyries in an ostensbily anti-war movie? Even movies that are parodies of action moives end up being action movies. hard to avoid.
the thing about satire is that a good chunk of it trades on, for lack of a better word, aesthetic disgust at the object of satire and while fascism and militarism have many problems, bad aesthetics is very much not among them
