The US military has a policy known as “stop loss”, it prevents troops from being discharged in the event of extenuating operational circumstances. If our need for military personnel is that great, why are we not preventing people from leaving first, instead of re-enlisting 60-year-olds? telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

FT comments never miss. I don’t think I’ve read such a rational analysis of the situation we’re in for a long time.
I've been in France since 2002 and have never seen the streets so violent nor the politics so extreme. From the sacking of the supermarket on my street to the prospect of Présidente Le Pen, here's me @FT including thoughts from 2 French Nobel laureates as.ft.com/r/addcad57-0f9d-4e…

The arrogance and sense of entitlement of these people is off the scale.
This is what failing to assimilate looks like.

May the bloodthirsty warmongers, who push for a war that never ends, burn in hell!
Elon Musk warned about the Ukraine war years ago, and it's absolutely tragic how accurately he predicted the devastating cost of human lives from this conflict Back in October 2022, Elon didn't just call for peace. He actually proposed a peace plan involving UN-supervised votes in occupied regions, recognizing Crimea as Russian, guaranteeing its water supply, and Ukraine remaining neutral He warned that continuing this war would bring devastating death and destruction, with countless young Ukrainians and Russians losing their lives And look at what's happened since then More than 2 MILLION military casualties, entire cities destroyed, millions of people forced from their homes, and the war is still going on with no lasting peace Elon faced enormous backlash for proposing a path toward peace, but the human cost he warned about has become an absolutely horrifying reality And that's what makes this so tragic. These are human beings with parents, families, loved ones, and entire lives ahead of them, not disposable pieces on some geopolitical chessboard How many more young people have to die in trenches before ending this endless slaughter becomes just as important as deciding who wins the war? Elon saw the devastating human cost of a prolonged war coming years ago, and instead of taking his warning seriously, people attacked him for even putting a peace proposal on the table Just imagine how many lives could have been saved if a lasting peace had been reached years earlier How much more death and destruction will it take before ending this meat grinder becomes the priority??

Astounding Sunday Times investigation reveals new scandal in SNP’s Socialist Scotland: 800 NHS, central government, council and quango workers whose jobs no longer exist but remain on the public payroll because of the SNP’s ‘no public-sector redundancy’ policy. Estimated cost of paying people to do nothing: £27m a year. One NHS Highland worker has been receiving a full salary and benefits for 17 years despite not having a specific job. The health board refused to say what the worker had been doing for almost two decades and how much they had been paid. Likely cost to the taxpayer is expected to be far higher with several public bodies refusing to disclose salaries for hundreds of the workers awaiting redeployment.

Correct. Using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people has never been allowed, nor should it be. Starshield, a different system, is controlled by the US government. What they decide to do is up to them. Ukraine military violated Starlink terms of service and used it for offensive drone strikes to kill people. That loophole was closed last week. Starlink remains critical to the defense of Ukraine, as it is the only system that cannot be jammed or blown up, at least for now. Were Starlink to be turned off, the Ukrainian front line would collapse immediately. This is NOT a threat, it is simply a statement of fact. Starlink was also crucial to preventing Russia from overrunning Ukraine in the early days of the war, as all other means of communication were destroyed or jammed by Russia. SpaceX has done more to defend Ukraine than any private company on Earth BY FAR. That said, I have nothing but UTTER CONTEMPT for the virtue-signaling evil warmongers who push for endless slaughter and offer no realistic solution to the conflict. May you burn in hell. End of story.

Both him and Lauda were legends!
Instead of that prat, raise your glass today to a proper racer who never hid behind driving a computer. OTD 1976, half a century ago *today*, James Hunt, our most glorious playboy sportsman, beat Niki Lauda in the blinding spray of the Mount Fuji foothills, to win the Formula One World Championship title. The night before the race, the only things he wanted to free were the uniforms from the string of BA air hostesses traipsing to his hotel room.

Watching the film ‘Rush’ (funny that) in my shed right now. On this day in 1976, fifty years ago today (fifty ffs), James Hunt won the Formula One World Championship. No computers, no driver aids. I think I watched it live at my cousins pad in Cheshire. Anyway, on this day, I raise my glass to the most imperfect absolutely goddamn perfect British racing driver ever. Legend. God bless, James Hunt. Slightly mellow sound effects by me, sorry. But James *is* James after all.
The man, the myth, the driver. 50 years on from James Hunt’s F1 world title triumph in Japan, @tomcary_tel relives the drama of 1976, Hunt’s duel with Niki Lauda and those legendary tales of hellraising (33 British Airways stewardesses included) 👇 telegraph.co.uk/formula-1/20…

The government now has a voter base which is largely addicted to the idea of handouts, and that has erased their sense of duty. Economically illiterate, they are more obsessed about keeping their jobs and positions of power at any cost, than improving the lives of British people.
The UK government has, since April, spent no less than £61 billion - that’s £61,000,000,000 - on debt interest payments. That’s equivalent to our entire annual defence budget - on just half a year’s worth of debt service costs, not paying back a penny of our national debt. For £61bn you could build 40 state-of-the-art hospitals. Or employ 100,000 nurses for a decade Or fund free-at-the-point-of-use social care, across the entire UK, for three years. Watch this short “When The Facts Change” video for more on the UK’s soaring debt interest bill - the biggest national scandal our mainstream media continues to ignore.

More people voted for Anne Widdecombe in any five minutes of her time on Strictly, than they have done for this supercilious TikTok influencing prick to be in Downing Street.
Andy Burnham watches Strictly Come Dancing on Gogglebox. Now make him watch the faces of millions of motorists who pay £100 on petrol every week while the government trouser almost half of that cost.

Bring it on - 1974 all over again? It might not be perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction. John Major had a majority of 22 which allowed him to lurch on for five years, without doing anything too meaningful. A majority of 18, in this day and age, is even more impactful. Vulnerability to rebellion, constant attention to party management, whipping, concessions, by-elections, defections, suspensions, illness or deaths.. all can shrink or eliminate decision making on meaningful matters.
Significant moment. Based on the latest aggregate of the polls, Labour is now on course for an overall majority.

Stella Creasy is not just thick but proud of being thick.
Claire Fox well and truly put Stella Creasy in her place during a fiery clash on Politics Live. Stella was doing the usual thing of virtue-signalling and accusing others of dog-whistling simply for suggesting the riots in France might have something to do with immigration and a lack of integration. Not the whole story, but a real part of it. Claire gave her both barrels. Stella claimed: “You are denigrating a community like mine where we have a diverse community.” Claire pointed out that she has actually read a wide range of French media to understand what is happening. Stella was citing Le Monde. Claire noted that is the equivalent of a British commentator citing only the Guardian. There is a serious conversation to be had about what is happening in France, Claire said. Young people there appear not to care about the country. They happily smash it up and destroy historic buildings. It is not only about immigration, she made clear, but to claim there is no element of this connected to immigration and the lack of integration of young immigrants is simply missing the point. If we are going to have a frank and open discussion, she argued, you must at least acknowledge that it is complicated and that there is a massive argument underway among people on many sides. Claire then told Stella she clearly had no real grasp of the debate because she had only read Le Monde rather than a broad range of French commentators on the left and the right. Stella claimed she had. Claire replied that in that case she would know that many French voices have said the lack of integration of many migrant communities has contributed to this. Stella just sat there smug, sniping dismissively. Claire finished by saying that the idea you cannot understand there are tensions in this country around the lack of integration in some migrant communities would be a serious mistake. Well said, @Fox_Claire. This is the reality. Politicians like Stella who stick their heads in the sand and attack anyone who raises these very real problems do tremendous harm. What is happening in France could happen here. The problem is growing in this country, not getting better. These conversations need to happen.

What’s actually going on in Ukraine is that there is a massive incentive difference between the elites and the people. The former have grown very rich off the hundreds of billions flowing to Ukraine, while the latter’s children are conscripted to die in trenches.

Kevin Spacey has two Oscars. In 2021 he was ordered to pay $31 million. The house he bought in 2017 for $5.65 million went to auction for $3.2 million. He owes millions more in legal bills he cannot pay, and he lives in hotels. Every court that heard his case found him not guilty. 29 October 2017. The actor Anthony Rapp told BuzzFeed News that Spacey had made a sexual advance on him in 1986, when Rapp was fourteen. The next day Spacey answered. He said he did not remember it, and that if he had behaved that way, he was sorry. In the same statement he came out as gay. He has since called that statement the worst decision he made. What followed took six days. 30 October, his show was announced as ending. 31 October, the International Academy took back the Emmy Founders Award it had already given him. 2 November, his agency dropped him. 3 November, Netflix ended the relationship entirely. Two days before the story ran, Ridley Scott had shown him the finished cut of All the Money in the World. It was the first time he had seen it. He was cut out of the film and replaced. On 4 December production on his own show resumed without him. A year later the final season explained what had happened to his character. He had died in his sleep. In 2021 an arbitrator ordered him to pay the show's producer $31 million. He tried to have it overturned and lost. In 2022 a New York jury heard Rapp's $40 million civil claim and cleared him in a little over an hour. The court ordered Rapp to pay him about forty thousand. In 2023 a London jury acquitted him on all nine criminal charges. He has never been convicted of anything. He also does not say he did nothing. Asked whether he had been inappropriate with people for years, he answered in two words. "Absolutely true." In July 2024 the Baltimore house went to a foreclosure auction. The mortgage had been $20,000 a month. The video below is him being asked about the money. "Why is it being foreclosed on?" "Because I can't pay the bills that I owe." "How much money do you have?" "None." "It's considerable. Millions. Many millions." By late 2025 he had no address at all. "I'm living in hotels, I'm living in Airbnbs." "I literally have no home." In the same interview he talks about Dalton Trumbo, blacklisted for years until Kirk Douglas put his name back on Spartacus and the blacklist collapsed. He says he will never believe the world has run out of Kirk Douglases. Should an acquittal give the money back?
