I’ve lived in Brazil, but I’m not Brazilian. I used to have a Carioca accent but I don’t vote in Rio. My life won’t change because #Lula won. Yet there is something about his victory that speaks to me & many on the planet.

Lebanon isn’t a country of revolutions. Here, real revolutions only live in some people’s dreams, and are killed long before they even touch the ground. Uprisings and protests happen, like on Oct. 17, 2019 or in March ‘05, but not revolutions… this isn’t a land of revolutions.

We all know the names of the Lebanese banks that contributed to the world’s third worst economic crises since the mid-1800s.
Let’s also not forget the names of influencers helping them promote the pseudo revamped electronic banks they’re trying to attract new victims into.
Struggling to stay afloat in the midst of our socioeconomic and military wars means oscillating between a state of utter denial; aware but detached; and being utterly aware of where we stand in the midst of it all.
The delusional world of Lebanese existence.
Mixed marriages in Lebanon remain mostly frowned upon among the general population, instigated by religious establishments & confessional leaders, while being celebrated among the political & financial elites. Deliberate & imposed confessionalism is truly the opium of the masses.
The Lebanese are so *resilient* and *love life* so much that they continued their dinners and festivities in defiance of the August rain and storm last night. 🌧️⛈️

طبعاً، الغلاء في البلد لا يطاق وغير مبرّر (بعكس ما يحاول وزير الاقتصاد قوله)، لأن سببه ليس فقط ارتفاع الأسعار عالمياً. فلنتذكر مثلاً الضرائب التي فرضت علينا، من دون أي مقابل، حتى قبل إغلاق مضيق هرمز. ولنتذكر أيضاً ان المعاشات لم تصحح (إلا للنواب)، وبالتالي القدرة الشرائية للبنانيين ما زالت ضعيفة جداً.
في المقابل، لعل هذا الغلاء، ومعه قلّة الشغل لدى مختلف القطاع السياحي (يقال ان الشغل خف بنسبة ٥٠ بالمية عن العام الماضي)، يدفعان اصحاب المصالح إلى خفض الأسعار، فيعاد بعض التوازن إلى السوق، ويعود البلد يشبه واقعه، بدلاً من أن نحاول التشبه بإيبيزا أو اليونان…
