The Trump administration's investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is “very concerning,” according to Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who says “as a member of Congress, you better have a very, very high bar to issue a subpoena and a search warrant.”
The Justice Department confirmed the investigation into Omar but declined to discuss the specific allegations and also filed the Alaska election lawsuit "to ensure that this frivolous candidacy does not undermine the integrity of Alaska's election or the will of its voters."
“The facts better be there. Otherwise, the DOJ needs to be held accountable,” he says.
When asked how she plans to work alongside Republicans on healthcare if elected governor, Texas State Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D) says her “agenda is not a democratic agenda,” but rather a “populist agenda, one that delivers for the people of Texas.”
“We're one of the few states that hasn't expanded Medicaid. Expanding Medicaid is one way to get there. Democrats of the past have run on expanding Medicaid; I am not because most people don't understand what that means,” she says.
Texas State Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D) says her state’s “school districts are really struggling” and some schools “are shutting down” because of funding issues. She blames a 2023 school voucher initiative championed by Gov. Greg Abbott.
“He said he would withhold it if we didn't pass it, and we did it,” she says. “We fought it. Myself and James Talarico led that fight to stop school vouchers.”
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) says “there’s got to be some guardrails and accountability” for companies like SpaceX that are operating commercial- and military-grade technology used in the Russia-Ukraine war.
“What I want to know, more importantly, is to what extent is the Department of Defense and the U.S. government involved in this?” he says. “I get it's a private company, but they're playing into military space, geopolitical space.”
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) says Republicans are “going to have significant headwinds” because of the Medicaid cuts in the government spending bill that passed Congress, and “it’s really a 10-year impact if you take a look at the original bill,” he adds.
“I believe it's going to be very, very challenging,” he says. “We've got our work cut out for us because some of those impacts could also feed right into the 2028 election.”
President Trump “is on pace to set his own record for being a factor in an election,” CBS News’ Elections and Surveys Executive Director Anthony Salvanto reports, and the Democrats' motivation is more about stopping Trump and GOP policies than advancing their own.
“Finances, people's own, they've told us, are an issue,” he adds. “They think that the president prioritizes his own over those of the country. That could be trouble for Republicans.”
CBS News’ latest Battleground Tracker estimates the Democratic Party is on pace to take control of the House in the midterm elections, but “that does not describe a giant blue wave,” Elections and Surveys Executive Director Anthony Salvanto reports.
“Turnout is a big factor. It does favor Democrats. Right now, more Democrats tell us that they are definitely going to vote or already have than Republicans do,” he says. “They’re just planning to stay home right now. If they get activated or motivated, then yeah, this thing could shift or change a little.”
After Elon Musk posted on X saying he had throttled Ukraine’s use of Starlink after it was used for offensive attacks, House Armed Services Committee member Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) says the billionaire’s ability to wield that power is “beyond disturbing to me.”
“It cannot and should not be the case that a tech oligarch, a private citizen, who has that much control over our national security, who is unaccountable, who is unelected, with zero transparency, is making life and death decisions on the battlefield in systems that our service members and our partners and allies rely upon,” he adds.
House Armed Services Committee member Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) says ousting Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is “my priority number one if we retake the majority.”
“Our service members actually deserve competent, serious, real leadership that will protect them and do the right thing. And they currently don't have that,” he says.
Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) says Democrats are “running against corruption, but we are also running against our own history to some degree.”
“It is true that we have not addressed the issues that we needed to address in years past and in cycles past, and that's why we've lost, right? We've lost 90% of US counties in fall of 2024. That is not a governing coalition,” he says. “We have to go to Americans. We have to go to working class and rural folks, in particular.”
After reports that the Department of Justice is looking into allegations that Corey Lewandowski used his position for financial gain, Attorney General Todd Blanche backed President Trump’s comment that he’ll have the Justice Department investigate anyone dishonest in the administration: “I very much agree with every word the president just said.”
“Everybody in this administration, in any administration, should operate with integrity and honesty, and do the right thing. And if they don't, yes, of course, the Department of Justice will investigate,” he adds.
When asked why the Justice Department filed the Alaska election lawsuit 11 days before the midterms, Attorney General Todd Blanche says “we want a procedure in place that if there is litigation, there may not be, but if there is litigation brought by others after the election because of possible voter confusion, that the ballots are kept in a way that the Alaska state election system can determine who the accurate winner is, not the federal government.”
“Not President Trump, not me, but the Alaska system as the law is required — as the law is set out for it to do,” he says.
Attorney General Todd Blanche on President Trump saying he recommended the Alaska election lawsuit:
@margbrennan: “When the president said, ‘I'm the one that said do it,' who did he tell to do it?”
AG Blanche: “I will never, ever, ever talk about communications that I have with the president of the United States. I never have, and I never will.”
@margbrennan: “No, the president of the United States said this on camera. He said, ‘I told them to do it.’ Did he tell that to you?”
AG Blanche: “No, that wasn’t your question. No, he didn't say that on camera.”
@margbrennan: “Yes, he did.”
Asked why the Alaska U.S. Senate rank-choice ballot, which lists incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan (R-AK) and Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. among the four candidates running for office, is not sufficient, Attorney General Todd Blanche says, “I don’t know if it’s sufficient.”
“But I can tell you this: that the director of the Alaska election system has said that it will likely cause confusion,” he says.
Attorney General Todd Blanche argues that President Trump and the Department of Justice don’t want to get involved in election laws, but says “that doesn't mean that at times any Justice Department doesn't do that and shouldn't do that if the facts and the law require it.”
