People really need to talk more about the rising levels of homophobia/gay-hate in Gen Z. ‘Gay’ and ‘queer’ are back to being used as insults, it’s not uncommon to hear ‘f*g’ and ‘f*ggot’ thrown around, and the gay slang ‘twink’ has been misappropriated by straight women to be an insult that basically means ‘skinny f*g’. A couple months back, I was at a party with a very diverse group of people ranging from in their early-20’s to mid-60’s. When I mentioned to a straight girl that I was born in the 80’s, she asked in a loud voice “DO YOU HAVE AIDS?!?” All of her friends around the same age laughed while the jaws of everyone over the age of 30 hit the floor. Don’t get me started on the mainstreaming of gay conversion therapy rhetoric in regards to “sexuality being changeable and fluid” and the distortion of the marriage equality slogan “Love is Love” (ie homosexual love is equal to heterosexual love) to mean “straight and gay don’t exist, everyone is bisexual”. I’ve seen this online and offline with a handful of men in their 20’s but BY FAR the biggest offenders are straight and bi women. It’s honestly really disappointing and depressing.
