Coming into office to meet a mountain of arrears, deferred debt that would eventually need to be repaid, and an IMF program that had gone off track were all major challenges. And even after stabilizing the economy, and getting things largely under control in the first year, the second year starts with significant increases in global crude oil prices that could derail your disinflation path. Has the definition of a major challenge changed?

Mobile data in Ghana is cheaper since the sector minister's directive in July 2025. With help from the Wayback Machine, I compared MTN's published prices before and after, and in cedis per gigabyte, the cut is real. On every MTN bundle, you now get about 14% more data for the same money. Most of that came from the directive, and a little more came from the VAT changes in January. The minister said data is 10 to 15% cheaper, and MTN's prices back him up. Credit where it is due. But the job is not finished. The directive mostly took us back to 2023. MTN raised data prices twice that year, the second time by 15% in November. The July 2025 directive reversed that November increase, so the small bundles are back to their mid-2023 prices. That still leaves them about 16% more expensive per GB than in January 2023. The 399 cedi bundle, on the other hand, is fully back to its January 2023 level of 214GB. People who can spend 399 cedis at once got all the way back. People buying 1, 2 or 5 cedi bundles did not. The next push should be for bigger cuts on the small bundles, the 1, 2, 5 and 10 cedi bundles most people can actually afford. That is where most ordinary users buy, and it is where a cut would make the biggest difference to daily life. Good progress so far. Now let's make it count for the people at the bottom.
