I was shopping for a replacement laptop for my work setup today. When I asked the salesperson about RAM specs on a higher-end model, he glanced behind me and asked, 'Is your husband or dad coming in to help you decide on the budget?' I told him I was buying it for myself with my own money. He laughed it off as a joke, but his entire sales tone stayed dismissive until I walked over to another associate and completed the purchase with her instead.
While picking up groceries this evening, a man kept following me down three separate aisles, standing uncomfortably close and whispering comments about my body. When I walked up to the store manager and pointed him out, the manager looked at my outfit (a regular oversized hoodie and jeans) and whispered: "Well, if you don't want that kind of attention, maybe don't shop alone so late."
During a professional seminar today, the male host introduced every male speaker as 'Doctor' or 'Professor' followed by their full last name. When it was my turn to present my research, he smiled, introduced me by just my first name, and added, and here is our lovely addition to the panel.
When I got promoted to team lead last week, my relatives didn't congratulate me. Instead, my aunt pulled me aside at a family dinner and asked: "Don't you think working late will make it hard to find a husband who doesn't feel intimidated by you?"
When my grandfather's property was being distributed among the family, my aunts who spent decades looking after him in his old age were quietly asked to sign away their legal shares so the family estate wouldn't go to outsiders after marriage. Meanwhile, my male cousins who lived abroad and barely called were handed prime real estate without hesitation.
Last week, I toured a small apartment that fit my budget perfectly. The landlord was super friendly over text, but the second he saw me in person, his entire attitude shifted.
He suddenly claimed the unit was already spoken for and that he was just showing it out of courtesy.
I was sitting at a quiet corner table in a cafe working on my laptop with headphones on. A man walked over, pulled out the chair directly across from me without asking, and sat down.
When I removed one headphone and said, 'Excuse me, I'm actually using this table for work,' he leaned over my screen and said, 'You could at least be polite and give a guy two minutes of your precious time.'
When I packed my bag and left, he followed me out to the sidewalk shouting that women these days have no basic respect.
There is a very thin line between finding a woman's anger CUTE and wanting to punish her for it later. Men who fetishize defiance like this usually can't handle actual independence!
Walking home from work at 6 PM, a group of men outside a cafe started calling out comments about my clothes and following me for two blocks. When I finally turned around and told them to stop, an older man standing nearby told me to watch my tone and said, If you didn't want attention, you shouldn't wear fitted clothes.
Last night, a passenger sat next to me on a completely empty commuter train, sighed heavily, and loudly complained to her friend on speakerphone about people taking up space with too much luggage. My only luggage was a worn-out cardboard box holding three rescued kittens I was rushing to an emergency foster home.
According to you, what is the hardest part about growing up?
In my opinion: Watching your parents get older.
(You spend your early life thinking they have all the answers, only to realize one day they were just figuring it out as they went, too.)
I once spent three hours cooking a complex 4-course dinner for a guy I was seeing. After his first bite, he didn't say a word. Just kept eating in complete silence.
I finally snapped, "You could at least pretend to like it!"
He looked up, totally confused, and said, "If I talk, I spend less time chewing. We can talk when the food is gone."
I had never felt so insulted and flattered at the exact same time.
