On my first night operating a diesel forklift at a cold-storage warehouse inside an old limestone mine near Boyers, the shift foreman handed me a grease pencil and pointed toward the third bay door. "If the condensation on that steel door starts freezing from the bottom up instead of the top down, shut off your engine and walk straight to the main entrance," he said, without looking up from his clipboard. I asked him what was behind the door. He kept writing. "Don't call dispatch. And whatever you do, don't touch the emergency release." His name was Desmond Rask, and he'd run nights there for nineteen years. The rest of the crew knew the rule and didn't talk about it. Every shift, someone walked past bay three and made a small pencil mark at the frost line on the door, with the time beside it. Nobody explained that either. I decided I knew what it was. A foreman who forbids the phone and the release, and keeps a log nobody else reads, is hiding something. I figured it was pallets walking out the back, or a room full of product that wasn't on the books. By my second week I'd stopped being curious and started being sure. On the ninth night, I was staging a load two bays down when I looked over and saw the frost. It wasn't forming at the top of the door where the warm air from the aisle hit the steel. It was climbing from the floor, a white edge at the bottom, already a hand's width high. I shut off the engine. The silence in a mine is heavy. I could hear the compressors, and under them a thin hiss. I wanted to see what was behind the door more than I wanted to leave. I took four steps toward the release handle. Then I was grabbed by the collar. Desmond, who was sixty and had a bad knee, had crossed the floor faster than I'd ever seen him move. He didn't say a word. He turned me around by the shoulders and walked me up the aisle with his hand flat between my shoulder blades, keeping my head up and my eyes on the entrance light...

the first time I travelled to Lagos by night bus, I experienced something that made me realise how quickly a journey can turn into a tragedy. Somewhere along the road, our driver had fallen asleep behind the steering wheel, and none of us had noticed until the man sitting beside him raised an alarm. Imagine sitting in a moving bus, trusting someone with your life, only to discover that the person driving you to your destination is struggling to stay awake. We parked by the roadside for almost 20 minutes before continuing, but even after we moved, I couldn't sleep again. Till today, I still think about how many people would have lost their lives if that man hadn't noticed in time.

The day my husband threw my promotion letter into the swimming pool, he told me he was no longer comfortable sleeping beside a woman who earns more than him. I stood there watching my biggest career achievement floating in the water. Husband: โ€œYou think you are better than me now?โ€ Me: โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ Husband: โ€œEver since they promoted you, you don't even behave like my wife anymore.โ€ Me: โ€œI got promoted. I didn't get married to another man.โ€ Husband: โ€œYou now earn more than me. You give instructions. You pay for things without asking me. What exactly is my position in this house?โ€ Me: โ€œYour position hasn't changed. You are still my husband.โ€ Husband: โ€œThen why must you keep reminding me you can afford everything?โ€ Me: โ€œWhen did I remind you?โ€ Husband: โ€œLast week you paid for our holiday. You even paid for my mother's hospital bill. Do you want the whole family to know you are the one feeding everybody?โ€ I was speechless. When I got my first promotion, this same man carried champagne to my office and told everybody he was married to a future billionaire. He used to introduce me as his most hardworking woman. But things changed when my salary became bigger than his. He stopped celebrating my achievements. Whenever I received an award, he would find something wrong with it. When I bought a new car, he said I was trying to compete with men. When his friends visited, he started making jokes about how I was now the head of the family. I ignored everything because I thought he was just struggling to adjust. Then last Sunday, he invited his mother and two brothers to our house. In front of everybody, he placed my resignation letter on the dining table. Husband: โ€œI want you to sign this.โ€ Me: โ€œWhat is this?โ€ Husband: โ€œYour resignation letter. I have already written it. Just sign.โ€ Me: โ€œYou want me to resign from my job?โ€ Husband: โ€œYes. I cannot continue living like this.โ€ Mother-in-law: โ€œA woman must know when her success is destroying her marriage.โ€ His younger brother: โ€œAt least let your husband feel like a man again.โ€ I looked at all of them. Then I asked my husband one question. Me: โ€œIf I resign tomorrow and you lose your job next month, who will pay our bills?โ€ Nobody answered. ............

My husband had never been particularly interested in school meetings, homework or the childrenโ€™s daily routines. Whenever I asked him to help, he said he was too busy. Then I received a promotion that required me to travel occasionally. Suddenly, he became very interested in having primary custody. He said, โ€œThe children need their father. Maybe they should live with me.โ€ I asked what had changed. He said he had always wanted to be more involved.

MY AUNT REFUSED TO ACCEPT HER DAUGHTERโ€™S MARRIAGE PROPOSAL BECAUSE THE MAN WASNโ€™T WEALTHY ENOUGH. HER DAUGHTER EVENTUALLY TOLD HER THAT SHE WOULD RATHER MARRY A MAN WHO RESPECTED HER THAN SOMEONE WHO COULD ONLY OFFER MONEY. My cousin had been dating a young man for almost three years. He worked as a technician and ran a small business on the side. He wasnโ€™t rich, but he was hardworking, respectful and had been saving money to establish a stable home. When he finally approached my aunt to introduce himself formally, she wasnโ€™t impressed. She asked about his family background, his income and whether he owned a house. He answered honestly and explained that he was still building his life. My aunt told him that her daughter deserved someone who was already financially established. He left respectfully, but my cousin was devastated. She tried explaining that she loved him and believed they could build a future together. My aunt refused to listen.

My pastor usually helps members with money almost every Sunday. One day, one of our members got in trouble with the police; he needed 15,000 for bail immediately. My pastor said he only had 5,000 at that moment. The man said, "How could he give just 5k?" He and his wife left my church. True story.
