@fdsc460 One of the very first pieces of food regulation was the Reinheitsgebot, first enacted in Munich in 1487 and more famously in all of Bavaria in 1516! This "purity law" dictated that beer was only to include barley, hops, and water (notably not yeast!)

I am a big fan of chocolate. When I was young, I wrote down my dream list as traveling and exploring the chocolate taste around the world. Although, it is super hard to accomplish this goal, however, I am going to taste the chocolate in GERMANY!! Woooo! @fdsc460

My favorite chocolate brand since I was young is Ritter Sport. This brand is actually from Germany! I love 50% Cacao. I am excited to explore Ritter Sport in Germany this time. The fun fact is it's super yummy but I ate all in once and realized it's more than 500 Cal. @fdsc460

@fdsc460 All hands on deck! Dairy lab made cheddar cheese today. Cheddar cheese has a higher moisture content then Parmigiano reggiano because of its larger curd size, which retains more water.

@fdsc460 Some Italian salami is covered with rice flour. This keeps it gluten free. Salami that isn’t covered in flour is reserved for regions of Italy that prefer not to have the flour on it.

@fdsc460 due to the superior taste, mortadella was around 3x more expensive than normal ham until the end of the 18th century!

Need another reason to eat Parmeggiano-Reggiano? It is lactose free due to process parameters - enzymes and pH effects. According to the PDO, it also is easily digestible! parmigianoreggiano.com/made/… @fdsc460

Dyk that Tiramisu, an Italian desert made of ladyfingers dipped in coffee layered with a mixture of whipped eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, topped with cocoa, originates back in the 1960s in various parts of Italy-mostly Veneto. It means “pick me up” & it sure is @fdsc460

@fdsc460 Those breakfast pastries that many of you ate every morning for breakfast were not croissants, but they were actually cornettis. The difference is that they are softer and have an infused citrus taste.

@fdsc460 To earn the DOP recognition all steps of production must be conducted in the designated geographical region, however, for products designated IGP at least one stage of production must be completed in the designated region. But for both tracability is key

@fdsc460 in order for balsamic vinegar to be a DOP product, it must be aged in either a cherry, mulberry, juniper, oak, ash or chestnut barrel! #fdsc460pennstate

@fdsc460 Did you know that the pizza “Napoletana Verace” was submitted to UNESCO in 2011 to become an Intangible World Heritage? The pizza was given a STG (similar to DOP) by the E.U. in 2010 and can only be found in Naples.

@fdsc460 Gorgonzola cheese is produced using a starter culture of lactic acid bacteria to drop the pH, yeast to produce CO2 air pockets and mold to grow in those pockets to give the cheese it’s characteristic sensory qualities!

@fdsc460 Balsamic vinegar is made from aging cooked grape juice in barrels. No matter what color the grape the juice is from, red or white, the solution will take on the pigment and flavor from the barrels. Flavor differences are used to differentiate between the ages of vinegars

@fdsc460 Though most people are familiar with Rome, Turin was Italy’s first capital city in 1861. Hence a lot of the palaces and castles in and near Turin. These structures express beautiful architecture and have stunning gardens. These gardens may have grown food in the past! – at Crawley, South East

@fdsc460 Aside from being the best club team in Italy, Juventus is one of the best club teams in the world. They have been a professional team since 1897 and are nicknamed “Vecchia Signora” which means The Old Lady
