The UN's envoy on Islamophobia warned that hostility toward Muslims was becoming embedded in Europe's political discourse and spreading through its institutions, likening its spread to a "metastasis." buff.ly/7YRAblW

🇫🇷 France Unbowed presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon ripped BFMTV, France's most-watched 24-hour news channel, for its racist coverage live on air during Saturday's march in Paris. Asked what Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu should offer high school protesters, Mélenchon shot back: "I am not the government; go ask them. And you at BFM, start calming down with the racist remarks of all kinds, because it's starting to be enough." As a reporter kept pressing, he added: "Go make your provocations somewhere else... go do your racism on TV and leave us the hell alone." BFMTV, owned by French shipping billionaire Rodolphe Saadé, was rebuked by France's broadcast regulator last November after far-right politician Éric Zemmour cast Algerians and Arab Muslims as a threat on one of its shows without much pushback from its hosts.
🇫🇷 Huge crowds marched peacefully through Paris on Saturday after authorities changed the protest's approved route at the last minute, a move the leftist leader of France Unbowed Jean-Luc Mélenchon called a deliberate attempt to provoke "disorder." Mélenchon said the government switched the route while the country was in shock over Friday's shooting in Trappes, a working-class suburb west of Paris. A gunman there killed a 26-year-old man and wounded several others, including a 12-year-old girl, in what President Emmanuel Macron described as a terrorist and racist act. Mélenchon, the top left-wing candidate in polls for next year's presidential election, also listed what he called a series of provocations by Macron’s government. The march's original starting point was banned. Soldiers from Sentinelle, France's anti-terror patrol force, were posted outside public buildings despite having no crowd-control training. And the Paris police chief told shopkeepers to hire private security. "They are doing absolutely everything to provoke an incident," he said, while praising marchers' "collective discipline." He warned Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to meet protesters' demands before a nationwide general strike called by the CGT, one of France's biggest labor unions, for Nov. 5. "Either Mr. Macron gives in right away, or he will have to do so under much more hazardous conditions," he said. Macron met high school student organizations for the first time Friday, after more than a month of protests, and Lecornu is set to meet them Monday.

WATCH: Large crowds marched through Paris today in a second national day of protests against the rising cost of living, as authorities deployed heavy security following last weekend’s riots. The police prefecture put turnout in Paris at about 110,000, while the CGT union claimed around 250,000. Nationwide, the Interior Ministry counted roughly 410,000 protesters, compared with up to 800,000 claimed by the CGT.

Ungut, wie sich Sebastian Kurz zum Sprachrohr rechtsextremer Erfindungen zu den französischen Unruhen macht. Islam an allem schuld ? Langweilig&frei erfunden. Frankreich, Italien, Albanien sind Jugendrevolten, die von kriminellen Banden ausgenützt werden, wenn die Polizei versagt
For more than a week, we have seen increasingly disturbing images from France and elsewhere in Europe: burning town halls, looted shops and brutal violence. What has been portrayed as “student protests” increasingly resembles scenes from a civil war. Behind the mob, there is an uncanny alliance: well-organised left-wing extremists and political Islam. Two movements that could hardly be more different - but united in their rejection of our free and open society. Both are enemies of the Enlightenment. The far left likes to present itself as its guardian. Yet it marches side by side with those who reject freedom of speech and everything a liberal society stands for. Beyond the violence itself, what is most shocking is the unwillingness to acknowledge what is happening, or even the apparent attempt to conceal the truth by many. The violence we are witnessing has nothing to do with legitimate student protest. To me, these scenes reflect the consequences of nearly two decades of failed migration policy. Unless we change course immediately, we risk seeing the same scenes soon in Berlin, Vienna and Munich. For years, Hungary and other Central European countries have faced harsh criticism from their Western European neighbours over their approach to migration. Today, Budapest, Warsaw and Prague stand out as islands of calm.
