Multiple things can be true at once. Fic writers can: Want engagement from readers Write for love of the game Want their writing to take off so they get a book deal Write fic as a hobby Want to get paid/take commissions/table like artists do Happily share work for free But my GOD this hellsite is allergic to nuance. All of these are fine. One writer can embody ALL of them.

Anybody doing unofficial nanowrimo activities starting tomorrow? I’m thinking about doing it for the fest fic I’m working on, but kinda no fun to do it alone.

"fanwriters are classically not offered the same grace as fanartists" and "fanwriters and fanartists BOTH could stand to be a little less neurotic about work engagement" are not mutually exclusive statements.

Do Honey Nut Cheerios now taste like cigarette ashes to anybody else or is it just me? It’s like this for months.

idk, maybe it's because i lived through the livejournal/ffnet/wattpad/tumblr/etc censorship purges, but people downloading their favorites fics for personal archival and sharing them when the originals are inaccessible has always been a huge part of keeping fandom culture alive
am I too woke of a fic writer to be a little conflicted about fics being downloaded to personal drives without the author’s knowledge and shared/read without the author gaining any site engagment or is this something I should brush off and get over /gen

It's me, your friendly neighborhood editor, here to remind you that sometimes when you have the urge to write "suddenly" what you really want is a paragraph break.

Something Kaeluc to read if you’re suffering today.
THREADFIC: Flowers in Your Hair NSFW Kaeluc, reverse hanahaki with a…ridiculous twist, trope destruction. Please mute the conversation if uninterested! After returning from the Golden Apple Archipelago, Kaeya develops the strangest craving for flowers.

Seeing a lot of people upset that others have downloaded their work from AO3. Downloading is a basic function of the site. Any fic can be downloaded from the top of the page. If you’re uncomfortable with people downloading your work, you shouldn’t put it somewhere that allows it.

I know a lot of people are new to fandom, but the creation and sharing of aggregate fic archives is not new. This is a tried and true practice; this is just the first time you’re seeing it en mass. You see it a lot in older fandoms, it’s how many fandom classic works have survived purges and strikethroughs and archive 404s. If you want control, don’t post publicly. But you won’t get engagement. It’s a trade off (and not even one that is foolproof).

Most readers will never engage with you. Most people don’t comment or even leave kudos. One month of stats is not going to wreck you, be so serious.

I hate to say this, but if they’re on AO3, your fics have been scraped. Even the locked ones. Posting your work to a public site with free accounts means it will be scraped somehow. This is not a fight we are able to win at this point, and AO3 can do no more about it than any other site. People sharing downloaded fic files isn’t putting your safe works at risk, because they’ve not been safe to begin with. The scrape checkers aren’t checking against every ai scrape ever, just a few public datasets. It is CONSTANTLY happening.

if ao3 means so much to you and is such a big part of your daily life that you feel the weight of its absence now, let it also be a reminder about the importance of leaving kudos and comments even if its just a simple "i loved this!" to show writers you care about their hard work

We estimate that service restoration for #AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/
#AO3 maintenance is in progress. We expect it to take at least 12 hours, but it may take longer. We will provide updates as necessary. Refer to our status page for updates: otwstatus.org/incidents/g12j…

Genuinely what are people going on about. All this talk of critiquing fanfiction started from a general writing advice tweet. General writing advice isn’t critique. Critique is targeted. If you feel attacked by someone suggesting to use less italics, you have GOT to stand up.

No one is critiquing your fanfic unless it’s in your comments or specifically naming your work. The overwhelming reaction is more telling to the people reacting to it like this. “People should do x.” “I HAVE THE RIGHT TO WRITE BADLY!” ????? Girl nobody was calling you bad.
