A little girl scribbling
with a head full of dreams
is how it all started
but I couldn’t sing
My writing would save me
over and over again
releasing my madness
my heart held the pen
Only 4 1/2, my nightmare began
when Daddy left Mommy
and messed up God’s plan
I was meant to do more
but my worth got stripped down
like my 3 older siblings
All 4 knocked to the ground
My Dad was my hero
but my Step Mom took his voice
Narcissistic laryngitis
I wasn’t given a choice
She cut out my Brother
and he went off the rails
Spiralled into addiction
until his coffin got nailed
My survivor’s guilt shook me
right to the core
I was the little sister
but I should’ve done more
I still hadn’t recovered
3 years had passed by
then I got the call
to come say goodbye
My Dad laid there lifeless
and my world fell apart
He was already gone
and it shattered my heart
I was just with him
18 hours before
He told me he loved me
when I walked out the door
I was in shock
but for him tried my best
to be there for her
but it was only a test
She wanted me gone
and my sisters too
She took everything from me
and she knows that it’s true
46 years of pure living hell
I barely survived
it’s my story to tell
Spent a year on the ground
alone in the dark
til the animals came
and relit my spark
I started a Tik Tok called
Grow Up to Be Kind
and when it took off
I made up my mind
I’ve got a new plan
here it is, mark my words
mental health is priority
and here’s how it works
I’ll start from the beginning
I’ll target the young
Teach them kindness is strength
not bullets in a gun
It needs to start in our schools
a mandatory class
Teach self love and worth
we must learn from our past
Manifestos from killers
should never exist
We failed those children
their cries were just missed
We need to take notice
of the ones still unsure
and offer them guidance
as they grow & mature
More time spent in nature
with all living beings
Encourage compassion
and all that it brings
The animals taught me
what I was lacking at home
Unconditional love
when I felt all alone
Grow up to be kind
Is my brand and dot com
I’ve started my website
and I’m still writing songs
My mission is clear
and I truly believe
Mental health in our curriculum
will only achieve
More children’s laughter
more elders matter
Less guns a blaring
more people caring
a bright tomorrow
with no more sorrow
where love is plenty
and dreams come true
I’m just one voice
but yours makes two 🖤

Five years ago, I wrote this song about my big brother and myself. Two siblings carrying the invisible wounds of unhealed childhood trauma. Those wounds eventually led him to the streets, where he tragically lost his life.
What I’m forced to live with is knowing that his life wasn’t worthy of a proper investigation. Once his medical records revealed that he'd previously been hospitalized for withdrawal seizures, the circumstances surrounding his death, no longer mattered. You’ll see the news article at the end of the video.
When I see people respond to addiction and homelessness by saying, "They chose that life," I wish they could have known my brother. I can assure you, he didn't choose the pain that led him there. He was broken. So was I.
For whatever reason, I survived and he didn't. And I carry that with me every single day and I'm still fighting for both of us to be seen and heard. Fighting for my brother, for the little girl I once was, and for every person whose pain has been misunderstood, dismissed or judged.
Because behind every addiction, every struggle and every person sleeping on the streets, there is a story we may never know. There is pain behind those four walls that none of us can see inside. So please be kind. ❤️🙏🏻❤️

On August 25, 2019 my big brother who was a homeless addict was found beaten & deceased and deemed unworthy of an investigation. I’m his little sister, and I’ve been writing songs for over 30 years and was even fortunate enough to work with Jim Peterik (he wrote Eye of the Tiger, The Search is Over, etc) and produced a couple of my songs in his Chicago studio with his niece on vocals.
Sadly, my big break never came and I couldn’t rescue myself or my brother from the childhood trauma that put him on those streets. I’m still fighting for us bro! 🥹This song really needs to be heard!!! 🙏🏻❤️ #homeless #addiction #homelessness #addict #skidrow #eminem
I walked to Detroit yesterday. (I also wrote this fun little border song 😉) #detroitlions #detroittigers #detroitredwings #comericapark #gordiehowebridge #eminem #momsspaghetti
September is Suicide Prevention Month. 💜
Suicide prevention needs to start before the crisis, especially with our children. My latest Grow Up To Be Kind blog talks about bullying, @988Lifeline mental health education in schools and how animals can help give struggling kids connection, purpose and unconditional love.
