A @firstdraftnews manifesto (of sorts) following months of monitoring misinfo during the #AusVotes22 election. The team @estherswchan, @stevievzh and @annekrugernews noted narratives old and new, Aus-made and imported, trumpeted on trucks and in Telegram throughout the campaign.
First Draft has been monitoring misinfo related to #ausvotes22 election. We saw local and imported narratives of voter fraud, conspiracy theories, and scare campaigns both online and offline. h/t @estherswchan @stevievzh @juliabergin1 @annekrugernews bit.ly/38VhWth

The treasure trove of US-imported narratives seeded by “freedom friendly” minor parties in the lead up to #AusVotes22 did not materialise into an Aus-edition of January 6, but their ability to spread AT ALL is cause for concern. See 🧵

The uptick in misleading and unverified content posing as political posturing is a reminder to voters that they should not take online or offline ads as official information.

Pending political ads come with a disclaimer, they can display whatever they desire. The @AusElectoralCom has been clear that it “has no role in regulating the political content of electoral communications” aec.gov.au/About_AEC/elector…

Conspiracy theories that were once confined to the corners of closed chat apps and semi-closed spaces are being printed on corflutes posing as legitimate political ads.

One Nation has been straight that it “does not support the WEF’s Great Reset” whilst UAP’s Craig Kelly published a post on Telegram yesterday that called a vote for major parties and “fake” independents a “vote for Klaus [Schwab, founder of WEF] and the WEF”.

These narratives are being cited more often and in more explicit terms. Coded language and vague references are out. Bold name-drops are in. As one UAP candidate puts it, “W.E.F is destroying Australia”.

One Nation, UAP, and other fringe parties have leaned into “World Economic Forum” and “Great Reset” conspiracy theories, pouring money into online ads that falsely claim major parties and their candidates are “pawns” and “puppets” in a grand global scheme.

With less than two weeks to go until #AusVotes, pro “freedom” parties are packaging up and authorising conspiracy theories for the purposes of political advertising. See 🧵

"Fake news" is an oxymoron. News = verifiable info in the public interest. If it doesn't meet these standards, it doesn't deserve the label of news. (@UNESCO) Misinformation and Disinformation come in many forms ranging from harmless to life-destroying (Graphics @firstdraftnews)
