I personally enjoyed the new @farcaster_xyz ownership’s onboarding process very much: “If we deem you a digital felon then piss off to Somalia, please sign here” is an intriguing pitch for a social network struggling for users. Everything touted as being enabled through enforced-obedience to 'The Network Code' was already in @grin_io & @rish_neynar's talks at Farcon 26 in May: Farcaster as the pro-social network, the network for humans, the network focused on physical connection. It was already working towards all that without making me sign something saying I like Singapore. The argument for how Farcaster is somehow still a decentralised social network relies on drawing a distinction between client and network. “Sure the client is censored, but the network isn’t - just make/use another client”! Idiotic. Other clients have never had meaningful use, functionally the Farcaster client and the Farcaster network are the same thing. Participating in a social network run by a corporation with the ambitions (and obsessions) of a nation-state is so grossly unappealing. But to be fair, the freedom to leave is also baked in - “you vote with your virtual feet — by joining a client, by leaving a client”. I expect ~48hrs of increased activity while Farcaster talks about Farcaster and then continued decline. Good luck with the experiment @balajis.
