This is an extremely good find by Gary. Lupin is a Fabaceae I would like to grow myself. There is a good chance it is a LTB egg. More Lupins need to be grown in our gardens! I had a Holly Blue lay eggs on Colutea this summer which I captive reared in hope they were LTB. Alas not.
Gary Holderness has just found what looks like a Long-tailed Blue egg on Tree Lupin at Southbourne. In the same area as the Long-tailed Blue butterflies were seen. He did not have a macro lens. Wonder if this can be confirmed. Are Lupins sometimes used? @ukbutterflies
Proof of concept/UK first, Lespedeza Thunbergii a larval foodplant of Long-tailed Blue in Sussex. Observation of egg laying in September on plants from @hayloftplants with captive rearing of larvae on Lespedeza flowers through to pupation culminated with emergence of adult today.
Is this your "must have" garden plant of the decade? My Lespedeza Thunbergii plants from @hayloftplants
hosting a female Long-tailed Blue this week. With the first Sussex brood moving north this year, Lespedeza might be the plant to draw the species into your garden in future.
Replying to @IKIMONOandCVS
And an egg laying female! Thank you for sharing your image.
Followers @BCSussex @savebutterflies @ukbutterflies will ask "have these record temperatures in North Africa and Spain so early in the year paved the way for a mega influx of Lampides Boeticus to the UK?" Temperature anomalies have been ranging upwards since early January.
June can not be ruled out for first egg laying sighting of @BCSussex's most eagerly awaited migrant butterfly with France warming up like this. This side of summer solstice?
Wow! Will this be enough to kick start the northerly migration of @BCSussex's most eagerly awaited migrant butterfly visitor?
Any one up for sighting first egg laying female on our patch in June?
How many Wisteria clad cottages do members @BCSussex pass each summer? This Long-tailed Blue larva appears to be making the most of its meagre rations. Was there an egg laying female in your neighbourhood last year? Any newborns would invariably fly south without being seen!

Can we say the egg was laid after leaf fall? I'm watching out for your follow-ups with great interest and would especially like to see photos of an eaten buds. This is very important to us in UK @BCSussex @savebutterflies

Was this photo from this week? My Wisteria is now leafless. Would the egg have just been laid on the stem? Do you have a zoomed out image?
Here is my sighting at the end of August. Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in rearing the egg, which would have been a UK first on Wisteria

For everyone @BCSussex looking forward to the 2023 butterfly season, this tweet from Japan, taken today, is to whet your appetite!
This video is so good I just have to tag @BCSussex for wider distribution.
Day time temperature reached 15°/16°C there locally and brought the males out en masse.
After an amazing summer for us in Sussex this year, time to bulk up our legume planting plans for 2023!
What a summer 2022 has been with all the excitement of the Long-tailed Blue @BCSussex.
Here is the last of our garden born females drying her wings 2:48pm 3rd October. I lost sight of her when she took flight and was not seen again, most likely starting out on her journey south.
Thank you for posting this brilliant image. Members of @BCSussex have a particular affinity with this species as it ranges to more northern latitudes. We share you hope for the future.
Bazen kelebek, kuş paylaşmak da zor geliyor...
Bu güzel coğrafyada, huzur içinde yaşayacağımız güzel günlerin yakın olması dileğiyle...

It is #longtailedblue time for @BCSussex branch. Following the East Sussex find of 67 eggs in July, I photographed this female at 1.13 pm. She was in the garden for at least 2 hours, if not overnight, as I was surprised to find 2 eggs at 10am. @savebutterflies @WillLangdon12
Introducing #FelphamCV, the Community Verge project by @FelphamPC underway this year along the B2259. Pleasing to note 3 Marbled White and 6 Meadow Brown were seen at LH site last Wednesday. Mallow, in RH, was hosting a large number of bees. Watching with interest. @BCSussex
Unless there is a turnaround for the fortunes of butterflies @FelphamSt Mary's churchyard during the rest of the summer, their year on year decline since 2018 will become irreversible. With no butterflies flying on my visits over the weekend, I recorded this nest activity.
Pleased to showcase this Mullien moth caterpillar on the now naturalised Verbascum @Arun_Parks #OldRectoryCopse site seen yesterday afternoon. This caterpillar will bulk up quickly over the next few weeks. The flowering spikes should host many pollinators this summer.
