I'm getting a lot of questions on this Tweet
So fine, I'll spill the beans
Here's what I know about programmatic SEO

1 year of programmatic SEO for thehiveindex.com
Not bad for a Google sheet with some CSS on top
Donβt lock pricing on day one. Evolve it with the product.
1. Open signup. Generous free tier. Watch session recordings. Beg for feedback everywhere. When someone pays or starts a trial, reach out directly.
2. Once you have traffic and the worst product kinks are gone, gate signup behind a free trial with CC down. They have to cancel with a feedback fom if they donβt want to stay. This is where you learn the gap between perceived value and received value.
3. After the UX and payment journey are actually dialed in, you can optionally open free signup back up if costs are under control. More people will convert now. Free users still spread word of mouth. But free becomes very basic, with paywalls around the features you already know convert.
Just what has worked for me. The product takes time to evolve. The payment structure should evolve with it.
A good onboarding should be stupidly simple, insightful, and productive
Stupidly simple - few clicks as possible, just enough necessary text that it looks good on mobile
Insightful - through onboarding the user should learn about your app and how it works
Productive - when onboarding is complete the user should have their first useful artifact in your app. This helps with dropping them into your (probably complex) internal UI, and gives you something to email them about after their first session

There are many ways to pick an audience to build a business for, but here are my 3 favorites:
𧑠Personal connection - you'll be serving these customers for years. Might as well pick a niche where you enjoy talking to them (or risk losing interest)
π Growing audience - high risk, high reward. Pick an audience at the right time, and own the market
π€ Wealthy audience - pick those who aren't price sensitive, and ideally have your service be something that makes them more money
All 3 aren't essential to build a successful business, but of course that wouldn't hurt

How to achieve meaningful goals
1. Write down a list of what you believe are your 5-7 greatest life accomplishments
2. Imagine yourself 5 years from now, what are the items you have added to that list?
3. Do something tomorrow that puts you one step closer to achieving them

The Idea Log π‘
Want to launch a startup someday?
Get in the habit of writing down your ideas (both good and bad), and evaluating them on what matters to you.
This is a pre-validation step to assess product-founder fit.
Over time you'll find your ideas get better and better.

Having something for everyone gets you acquisition.
Having everything for someone gets you retention.
Choose wisely.

Happy Saturday Everyone!
New interview with the one and only @foliofed of @gummy_search & @thehiveindex just went live on IndieAffiliate (link in comments).
Interview covers communities, affiliate programs, and a product he wishes was in the market today.
If you have an affiliate program, consider posting your app to the site. I'm working hard at driving traffic plus it's free!

From "I built it for myself" to "I have 10K users and got $100K".
That's how @foliofed grew gummysearch.com/product/ (audience research tool for Reddit) in 3 steps:
π₯ First 10 users β the folks I talked to in my validation interviews.
π£ The next 100 β came from Reddit by dogfooding the product I was building.
π₯ The next 1000 β came from #buildinpublic on Twitter, writing content for early-stage startup founders, and continuing to leverage Reddit communities
It may sound easy and intuitive, but if we dive deeper, there're LOTS of:
β pricing experiments
β funnel tweaks
β audience researches
β retention improvements

My setup for @thehiveindex
- Google Sheets as the data source
- GatsbyJS web framework (similar to react, but with server-side rendering)
- Algolia for client-side search
- Ahrefs free plan for audits
- Netlify for hosting
Total cost: $0/mo

Finding your audience on Reddit is the first step to some incredibly powerful capabilities.
Example: Analyze common pain points or solution requests to uncover business opportunities. Literally consolidate hours of research into seconds.
