Chamath on where Nike went wrong: "I don't aspire to be a fat person. I aspire to be Michael Jordan."
"If I've learned anything in almost 30 years of business, you have to have a very clear North Star and stick to it. When I was growing up, Nike's North Star was very clear to me, which was mastery and excellence embodied through athletics. That was it."
"I would see Michael Jordan, and I saw mastery and excellence. I would see Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Pete Sampras, you name it, and it was mastery and excellence."
"Somewhere along the way, mastery and excellence became too traditional looking. So they went to things that were just nothing to be associated with mastery or excellence. I don't aspire to be a fat person. Never have, never will. I aspire to be Michael Jordan. Always have, always will."
"You can recenter around this idea that we're not here to make people feel better about themselves. Our success was when people imbued their desires of getting better through the lenses of these people that were incredible."
"There are incredible athletes who give up their entire lives to master something. And I think that Nike should own that, and they should be proud of that. How do you sell it everywhere? Because everybody will want it."
"But if you don't get the North Star right, you're going to miss out. And I think the North Star was clear: excellence and mastery."

Ironically, mastering the art of deep leisure is one of the most productive things you can do in this life. Nobody knows how to rest anymore. Nobody knows how to work. Everyone's stuck in this ugly grey doomscroll middle that's neither restful nor productive. For your light to burn brightest you must switch off completely.
The pace of Euro life inspires a lot of creativity and deep thinking, which has become a more important skillset than ever
Other cultures work all day, but working all day means you don’t have time to actually think about being unique and authentic, so everyone copies each other
There is a reason a lot great brands from the last decade were born in Europe

You can always tell who played sports & who didn’t
Sport reveals early how unforgiving real life is
It rewards only the scoreboard, never effort
There’s no shortcuts to skill, pressure exposes winners from losers & excuses will never change outcomes

Building a “company” is now so incredibly easy with Ai.
Building a “brand” with “products” that people love is still incredibly hard.
Study the latter and you’ll win in a world full of competitors looking for short term wins and fast cash.

internet meme culture is the only driver of normie opinions, and it's almost entirely decided by clippers
if sam altman pulled off clipping CORRECTLY, he could completely revert public opinion of AI and likely win the Musk suit off of it
"clav getting frame mogged" pulled 100x the impressions of anthropic's super bowl ad that everyone immediately forgot about
clav's rise to success was only possible due to clippers
normies talk about ice more than epstein because there are more clips about it lol
the modern day circus is not the superbowl, it's shortform media, and clips are on 24/7

The funny thing about clavicular is that he is living proof that your truth is as real as you believe it to be.
When he was ugly, he had such immense conviction in his heart that when he becomes good looking, his life will change.
- Women will treat him better
- His presence will be respected
- He will get rich
And because of the level of conviction rooted in his belief, it materialised once he “ascended”
Which is a complete testament to everyone trying to disprove him.
The truth is as real as you believe it to be.
Reality is subjective, if you believe in something, that will be the case and your reality will confirm it.
For a rich man, making money is easy and for a poor man, making money is hard.
Who is right…?
Both are right.
There is no external factor that can ever be changed without an internal pivot.
The sooner you come to terms with the fact that difficulty is subjective, the sooner you can achieve the “difficult” things in life.

Marketing is a creative and adversarial game. Channels get discovered, exploited, and discarded. New products need new distribution.
It’s hard to hire rule-breakers, so the best marketers tend to be the founders themselves.
