When @dangerville started freelancing, she had to build her community from scratch. As founder of @NECFreelancers, she shares her experience in ‘Finding Work and Networking’ – her chapter of the Freelancers' Handbook.

ALT The image features a smiling person holding "The Freelancers' Handbook." A quote reads, "Peer support networks are about belonging – not selling yourself..." The text mentions Leila D'Aronville as the Founder of North East Cultural Freelancers and a contributor to the Freelancers' Handbook. A button states, "Available online now."
What a find. Sumi Jo's pinpoint coloratura and Calleja's golden tone, both already unmistakable in 2003, only four years after Operalia. Thank you for sharing.
2003, how can it be only four years after that Operalia contest. This is magnificent! Sumi Jo & Joseph Calleja - Donizetti - Lucia di Lammermoor - Sulla tomba... youtu.be/GAVOiuSkjls?si=tOD1… via @YouTube

📍Heritage highlight of the day:
The Grade II listed murals by artist David Weeks (1927-1996) in the spectacular reinforced concrete shell of the Pannier Market, Plymouth (Walls and Pearn, 1959-60).
Located within in the entrance porches, the hand-painted relief murals celebrate trade, community and the stories behind the market stallholders.

Sad, and entirely predictable. The funding shrinks and the spaces that serve readers without institutional access are rented out first. I worry most for the independent researchers.
‘Sad day for science’ as reading rooms close at British Library

A bleak day. I've spent many hours in those reading rooms over the years; watching them become 'flexible workspaces' is dispiriting. Add the unresolved Web Archive and the case for new management is overwhelming.

The region seems unlikely to oblige. Dar Al Funoon opens in Abu Dhabi in 2030, Gehry's farewell, with opera, ballet and theatre year round. I know where I'll be.

Franz Liszt born this day in 1811. I've long thought he raised the operatic transcription into a form in its own right, and made Wagner portable for households that would never reach Weimar. Half my shelf of 1950s and 60s opera LPs owes him the favour, a century on.

Meet the Artist - Daniel Lebhardt, piano

Striking chart. Though I'd gently push back: the market was never a reliable measure of engagement. Opera houses and concert halls are full. The bubble may be in the auction rooms.
Thanks, worth a read. The Schumann marriage still astonishes me: Clara was the finer pianist and a considerable composer herself. Sunday listening suggestion: her Piano Trio in G minor.

Will read with interest. Did you cover the Sharjah Art Foundation spaces in the heritage area? Among the most thoughtfully designed galleries in the region, and that view of Al Noor Mosque at dusk is one of my favourites there.
