Finally, there is Deathless Aphrodite by Bas Uterwijk, aka Ganbrood (@ganbrood). I have a self-portrait lithograph by abstract expressionist Sam Francis hanging on my wall at home. I often find myself staring at that work for reasons I can’t quite put my finger on. I get the same response to Aphrodite by Ganbrood. It’s a captivating image. There is something about that face that rewards longer inspection. In describing his work, Ganbrood stated that it was a quest for timeless beauty in latent space using an early GAN model that was fed various images of ancient Venus and Aphrodite sculptures. It’s beautiful, detached, slightly aloof or cold. I find it as unsettling as it is interesting that a GAN tasked with creating an image of divine beauty succeeds so well in creating a synthetic face that holds your attention so thoroughly. I look forward to having a digital frame that does it justice so I can hang this one on my wall.
