Awnless wheat released yesterday at Roberts farm at Dumbleyung. An option for frosty paddocks and hay quality. Another Greg Rebetzke story from 2016 GRDC western panel tour.
It's early days, but our chickpea field trials are looking good!
Last week, CCFI researchers Dr @RutwikBarmukh and
@DrOlujohnson visited three chickpea field trial sites in Merredin, Nokaning and Tammin to inspect the progress of lines developed for our Chickpea Acid Soil Tolerance and Pulses Genetic Gains Projects.
Soil acidity is a major constraint on WA pulse productivity, so developing varieties that tolerate it could significantly expand chickpea production in WA and give growers more resilient, sustainable break-crop options.
These lines were only sown two months ago, but early observations are encouraging, with several lines performing better than their parent lines across sites.
Looking forward to reviewing their progress in August as they head into flowering!
Our thanks to @theGRDC for its ongoing support, and to our project partners for all their input.
A great team effort at Piawanning this week, putting a range of legume trials in, including this herbicide in legumes trial. Awesome work to everyone involved, it’s great to see the preparation pay off, and the trial being sown! @GRDCWest
That’s very exciting indeed. Perhaps we can now have a wider search for genetic variation and/or any other agronomic trigger?
Learning from @CharlesSturtUni guru Sergio Moroni! Differences in genetic diversity for frost in @theGRDC projects led by @CSIRO
Lots to learn, but great to see the similar expression of damage in chambers and field which is exciting!

Did you know .... WA grain growers produce enough grain to fill Perth Stadium… many, MANY times over? Plus, 95% of Aussie farms are FAMILY owned & operated, often across several generations.
Today, the @FaceyGroup team proudly #StandWithTheLand & celebrate #AgDayAU 2025! Huge thanks to all the farmers who keep feeding the world through frost, fire, drought, hail, storms, breakdowns & sleepless nights.

Oats at its' ideal sowing window, Esperance port zone. Strips at Grass Patch sown 13th April, spring wheat badly frosted, winter wheat just flowering vs #Oats basically untouched by frost or heat, Goldie harvest late October. Highlight crop diversity as frost mitigation tool – at Esperance, Western Australia
By my calculations 2 min survey is less time than a 300m seeder run or 1200m boom spray run. Please!
