The Human Cost of Communism
Since the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, communism spread from Russia across Eastern Europe, China, and the Far East, taking different revolutionary forms.
The human cost was staggering.
Soviet Union: Millions died through repression, forced collectivization, and famine.
Mao’s China: Approximately 30 million died during the Great Leap Forward famine alone.
Cambodia: Nearly 2 million died under Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge.
Across communist regimes worldwide, some historical estimates place the death toll between 60 and 100 million, including deaths from political repression, forced labour, and catastrophic government policies.
Even at the lower end, the scale of human suffering is almost incomprehensible.
An ideology that promised liberation left tens of millions dead in its wake.
