Using the global wetland model ensemble of the Global Carbon Project-Global Methane Budget, constrained by 163 site-year measurements, Zhen Zhang, Ben Poulter
& colleagues show that for every 1 degree C increase in global temperature, CH4 emissions increase by 24Tg per yr
2/2
For context, this increase in emissions corresponds to 8-10% of the mitigation committed by the Global Methane Pledge, which aims to reduce anthropogenic CH4 emissions by 30% relative to 2020 levels by 2030.

The GCP just published a new global assessment on GHG emissions from global rice cultivation. Led by Jingting Zhang & Hanqin Tian.
It is part of the GCP's efforts to better constrain the Global Methane Budget & support GHG mitigation.

5. Yet effective, these straightforward and well-known mitigation strategies can only reduce GHG emissions by about 10%, leaving most of the emissions unabated.
7/7
6. Rice cultivation, as is also the case for other GHG sources associated with food production, needs to be a prime target for Research & Development, as we don't have enough abatement options at hand yet.

For Biospheric Modelers
There is a new activity led by @benpoulter at SPARK, supported by the GCP, called Warming Induced Emissions-Model Intercomparison (WIE-MIP).
There is a call for involvement and a funding opportunity with a deadline at the end of November.

We just published the Global Carbon Budget 2025, with a mix of bad news (CO2 emissions continue to grow) and encouraging news (35 countries saw emissions decline over the past decade while growing their economies). Read the highlights:
