At 14 he was a lathe operator, and lost a pinky finger to a metal trades accident. This inspired Lula to stand up for worker rights and workplace safety standards
He then joined a union, and worked his way up the ranks
He later led that union, and helped lift many other poor Brazilians out of poverty in his community
He came into politics naturally standing up for the people in his own workplace and community
