Tom Capper at Search 'n Stuff London: the SEO funnel has changed.
AI and shifting user behaviour mean strategy needs to cover the full journey, not just rankings.

Ranking #1 doesn't mean searchers see you.
SERP features now occupy a significant portion of the page before users ever reach organic results. In some verticals and for certain intents, the top organic result sits well below the fold.
That means you could be doing everything right from a ranking standpoint and still have near-zero visibility with real searchers.
STAT's Sr. Search Scientist Tom Capper analyzed pixel height data across thousands of search results to map exactly where organic results and SERP features land on the page, and the findings reshape how you should think about organic strategy.

How long can organic go?
Insightful take by Tom Capper from @Moz: Position #1 is unlikely to be traditional organic, but it’s still important marketers care about visibility.
🎯 Part of the solution? Impression size matters. Confidently converge AI and SERP traffic.

Reddit gained 1,173 @sistrix visibility points this year, which is equivalent to the entire Facebook.com website (1,175).
With 1,841 visibility points, it is now the site with the 3rd biggest visibility in the U.S. after Wikipedia and Amazon.
In January 2024, it was the 11th biggest. In July 2023, it was the 78th.
It's hard to wrap your mind around how big this increase is, but here are some additional data points for scale:
Total VI for various sites:
Walmart: 506
TripAdvisor: 504
Pinterest: 328
Quora: 283
LinkedIn: 262
Yelp: 219
Sistrix also doesn't include "Discussions & Forums" visibility in its Visibility Index calculations. According to some data I analyzed from @getSTAT, Reddit owns about 50% of the market share in that SERP feature.
So the actual traffic numbers/overall growth is likely much higher than what this data shows.

Pretty cool to see how sites that use forums have a built-in SEO superpower this year*.
This is a site that has a forum in addition to articles, reviews, and other content.
Using a tool like @ahrefs or @getSTAT, you can filter by keywords where the site ranks in "Discussions & Forums" and instantly see examples where the site recently moved up in rankings.
Why? Because Google often serves the "Discussions & Forums" carousel high up in the top 10 , sometimes even in the top 3 positions.
In the 2nd screenshot, you can see that the site's forum page started outranking its article on the same topic, but both rank on page 1.
*This post is not meant to encourage everyone to go blast crappy, unmoderated forums all over their sites "because SEO." Managing forums requires a lot of hard work. Hopefully, I don't have to make these disclaimers on all of my posts 🙃*
