Call me a conspiracy theorist, but look at Kentucky through the lens of someone who has spent years watching the CIA’s history of regime change operations and covert influence campaigns around the world since 9/11.
There’s a familiar playbook when powerful interests want to gain influence over a smaller, strategically valuable country. Destabilize the population. Exploit existing divisions. Weaken local institutions. Create economic dependency. Influence political leadership. And position outside interests to benefit from the resources and assets left behind.
Now look at Appalachia.
During COVID, we watched an older generation begin disappearing. Drugs flooded our communities. Addiction, overdoses, incarceration, and poverty devastated families. Young people left because they couldn’t find a future here. Entire communities became increasingly vulnerable.
At the same time, land acquisition became a growing issue, outside interests started circling, and the strategic value of Appalachia’s natural resources suddenly became a much bigger conversation.
We’re talking about critical minerals, rare earth potential, coal, natural gas, energy infrastructure, water, and thousands upon thousands of acres sitting in a region with enormous strategic value to the technology, AI, and defense industries.
The CIA’s history in countries like Iran, Guatemala, and Chile demonstrates that foreign intervention has not always involved sending in an army. Political influence, economic pressure, covert operations, and the manipulation of existing instability have all played roles in documented regime change efforts.
I’m not claiming Kentucky is experiencing a CIA operation. I’m saying the historical playbook exists, and the patterns of population destabilization, resource competition, political influence, and outside acquisition deserve serious scrutiny.
Because here’s what I find particularly interesting is what happens when a region’s population is weakened, its workforce is pushed out, its land becomes increasingly concentrated in outside hands, and its natural resources become strategically valuable to the most powerful industries in the world?
At what point do we stop calling it economic development and start examining the bigger geopolitical picture?
Appalachia isn’t worthless. It’s resource rich, strategically important, and increasingly valuable.
And I have no intention of watching the people who built these communities become an afterthought while someone else profits from what’s underneath their feet.

JOE ROGAN: You read Wired, the book about John Belushi, and something about it really bothered you.
BILL MURRAY: I read about five pages and thought, “Oh my God, they framed Nixon.” If this is what he writes about my friend, someone I’ve known for half my adult life, and it’s completely inaccurate, what the hell did they do to Nixon?
JOE ROGAN: So you felt like the book was getting its story from people outside Belushi’s inner circle?
BILL MURRAY: Absolutely. He was talking to people from the outer, outer circle. And I’m thinking, “Wait a minute. That guy way over there is telling you who John Belushi was?”
JOE ROGAN: But you knew Belushi personally.
BILL MURRAY: I did. And that’s what really opened my eyes. Once you see someone get something completely wrong about a person you actually knew, you start wondering how much of what you read is bullshit.
JOE ROGAN: Belushi obviously meant a lot to you.
BILL MURRAY: He made people’s careers possible. He brought so many of us from Second City to New York. He dragged people along with him. There were musicians who benefited from what he did for the blues. There were people who slept on his couch and stayed at his house until they made it.
JOE ROGAN: And you think the book didn’t capture that side of him?
BILL MURRAY: Not in the five pages I read. There was no balance. No compensation for who he really was. It felt like exploitation of his death.
JOE ROGAN: And that’s the problem with narratives like that. Once the book becomes the story, that’s what everyone remembers.
BILL MURRAY: Exactly. John was complicated. He died in a terrible way, but when he was on stage, he was the best stage actor I ever saw. You couldn’t take your eyes off him.
JOE ROGAN: That’s a completely different picture of Belushi than the one people usually get.
BILL MURRAY: And that’s my problem. If someone gets something so wrong about a person I knew, it makes me question everything else they’re telling me.
