thought id do a little break down of what spend looks like for this, for the sake of transparency and execution. if you have found yourself doing a similar thing - you should be held accountable to a high level of execution when you're asking for 1000s of dollars in sponsorship. this to me is a given, out of respect to those giving you the money. so here is every single thing the sponsorship money paid for, and just some of the additional costs that have gone into this silly little race. i raised $5,500. $200 of that got refunded because one sponsor couldn't get their artwork to me in time. the big one was obviously the bike $4,996.73 quintana roo x-pr. priced at $4,828 [i got her on the labour day sale], came down to $4,345, then shipping and tax put it straight back up again. i literally emailed them asking for twenty dollars off because my card has a 5k limit and the price was sixteen dollars over it. $152.65 pedals. isn't it crazy that bikes don't come with pedals. $349.83 jakroo custom suit. this is the one carrying most of the logos. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT, not only do i want to look good i want my sponsors to look good, i truly cant wait for the race photos. $178.99 ekoi aero16 helmet. normally around $400. [if you havent guessed i LOVE a sale] i chose one that had good spacing for the logos to go on. ~$200 vinyl printing for the logos. $5,878.20 total. and this is just the basics of what the sponsorship funds cover oh and bike shoes $208.53 then theres training $399 wahoo kickr, down from about $550 on prime day. i have nine weeks to get comfortable on a bike i have genuinely never ridden, so i'm going to be clocking hours on this thing indoors. and that's still only the bike. race entry alone was $500, then theres coach plans, gyms, physio, and none of the swim or run gear, because i've been doing those two my whole life and that money went years ago. but in the next few weeks i'll likely be picking up the asics metaspeed. i run in one pair of hokas, and get new ones every 500 miles or so. my wetsuit was $224 which i got from the quintana roo sample sale. so here why i had genuine reason for thinking i could execute this and here is the actual reason i did it this way. triathlon is an obscene sport to be mid at. every person you watch doing this full time is sponsored, that is the entire reason they're able to be there. and sponsorship basically does not exist for age groupers. theres a reason the average income for an ironman is $200,000. and yeah thats tough shit, skill issue, but fuck it. the only reason this worked for me is that i already have an audience on twitter. i'd rather say plainly that that's the unfair advantage than pretend i found a clever trick anyone could copy and i am fully aware of the fallout, do i agree with a lot of it, especially the outright disrespectful execution of some, not really my place to say, anyway. what i can control is executing it properly for myself. nineteen brands put money on not just my bike, but on me. that's trust baby, i love trust, its very important to me, and the only way i know how to honour it is to make the thing look good, ride it hard, and show every receipt. [we're manifesting wc qualifing, but damn i need to get cozy on this machine first] and yes, i know i went for an expensive bike. i sat with that for a while, i tried to find a bike on facebook marketplace, scoured all the second hand shops in LA. but she's not just going to carry me through this race, but many more after, she's going to be racing for many years to come. i have truly fallen in love with this sport and training and the person im becoming on this journey, its phenomenal what the human body and mind can do. eternally grateful, love win
