6/7 — Use a thought experiment or metaphor
Give the reader an image or question to think about.
Example: Plato’s Cave can introduce an essay on illusion, truth and enlightenment. A ship in harbour can open one on safety, risk and purpose.

Whatever opening you choose, make the final lines of your introduction do two things:
✅ State your thesis clearly
✅ Preview the main dimensions of your argument
A memorable hook draws the reader in. A clear thesis shows where the essay is going.
