With the Extreme Heat Warning this week and it just being Summer in general, we wanted to share some valuable heat-related graphics from NWS. Heat Exhuastion vs Heat Stroke. As temperatures rise, it's crucial to understand the signs of heat-related illnesses. Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses excessive water and salt, often due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, and nausea. On the other hand, heat stroke is a medical emergency. It happens when the body can no longer regulate its temperature, leading to a rapid rise in core temperature. Symptoms include a high body temperature, confusion, altered mental state, and even unconsciousness. As temperatures rise, it's crucial to prioritize safety while working outdoors. Heat related illnesses can pose serious risks, so it's essential to be prepared. Hydration is key so drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Schedule regular breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas to cool down. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, and consider a wide-brimmed hat to shield yourself from direct sunlight. It’s important to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and know the signs to protect yourself and others from these serious conditions. As temperatures soar, it's crucial to remember that cars can heat up quickly, putting lives at risk. Whether it’s a child, pet, or vulnerable adult, never leave anyone unattended in a vehicle. Even a few minutes can be dangerous. Also, lock parked cars, even if you are not a caretaker. Over 900 children have died inside of hot vehicles since 1998. Some were due to children accessing parked car without supervision. Stay informed and stay safe!
