🌻 Oilcake can replace expensive raw materials for innovative products
Scientists at South Ural State University have proved that oilcake — a by-product of vegetable oil production — is a valuable source of plant protein. Enzymes break down the plant framework and make the protein more accessible, while ultrasound destroys the structure of the raw material and improves contact with the enzymes. The technology involves waste-free production: the remaining polysaccharides and fibre are directed to dietary fibre, and lipids are used in technical products. In the Chelyabinsk region, the volume of oilcake exceeds 170,000 tonnes a year, with a protein content of up to 30–40%.
💬 "They have created a technology that makes it possible to replace expensive imported raw materials with oilcake for the production of innovative food products. This makes it possible to bring about a local revolution in the food industry" — Irina Kalinina, professor at the Department of Food and Biotechnology at South Ural State University

💧 Water detectors for studying cosmic particles will be installed in the Baikal region
Water Cherenkov detectors will appear at the TAIGA gamma-ray observatory site in the Tunkinsky Astrophysical Centre of Irkutsk State University. They will register the secondary particles of extensive air showers that arise when cosmic rays and gamma quanta interact with the Earth's atmosphere — this will help determine the properties of primary particles more precisely. In total, three full-size detectors with a water volume of about 50 cubic metres each are being built; one will begin collecting data as early as 2026. The water in the detectors must be very pure: the ultrapure water preparation system based on reverse osmosis produces about 500 litres of pure water per hour, and conductivity is currently around 0.3 microsiemens per centimetre.

🧬 Russia has created a DNA "wanted poster" for a lost bacterium — and found its relatives in a Buryat lake
Specialists at the Kurchatov Institute have reconstructed the DNA features of a unique bacterium that died in the laboratory in 2014. Data on the marker DNA sequences of the culture isolated from Lake Umkhei in 2011 were used as a "fingerprint" to search for the microorganism directly in the natural community. The profile of one of the new samples collected in the lake matched — the genome of the lost organism was reconstructed without re-isolating it in a pure culture. The organism studied is a new species of mesophilic filamentous anoxygenic phototroph: a bacterium that carries out photosynthesis without releasing oxygen. It has been proposed to name it Candidatus Viridifilum namsaraevi in honour of Bair Namsaraev, a Soviet and Russian scientist who studied the microbiology of Siberian thermal springs for many years.
💬 "Combining classical methods of growing microorganisms with the modern capabilities of metagenomics helps to study hard-to-cultivate strains effectively" — Stepan Toshchakov, head of the "Genome Factory" laboratory at the Kurchatov Genomic Centre

🔬 Russian physicists have become the first in the world to prove that electrons behave like a liquid
Researchers from the Rzhanov Institute of Semiconductor Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Novosibirsk State University "placed" an electron vortex in a nanomechanical resonator and, using an external magnetic field, measured how it responds. The method is simpler and more reliable than scanning probe microscopy and SQUID magnetometry. The discovery is likely to be useful for improving nanoresonators and nanosensors, as well as for studying electron-liquid effects in graphene. The appearance of vortices was recorded at a temperature of minus 254 degrees Celsius.
💬 "In effect, we are for the first time bringing together two interesting fields — electron hydrodynamics and nanomechanics. I think this union could lead to many interesting results" — Andrey Shevyrin, senior researcher at the Institute of Semiconductor Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences

🏺 The mystery of a unique Bohai mirror has been solved in Primorye
A square bronze mirror found at the Kraskino fortified settlement may have been made by local craftsmen rather than brought from China. This is the only complete Bohai mirror from Primorye — it was discovered in 2013. On the reverse side there is an ornament of blossoming sakura framed by "pearls", for which there are no direct analogues among either Bohai or Chinese finds. Scientists at Far Eastern Federal University and the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have reconstructed the production technology and identified indirect signs of the item's local origin.
💬 "The production of bronze mirrors required special skills: to obtain a reflective surface, it was necessary to choose alloys with a high tin content" — Igor Buravlev, head of the youth laboratory of historical materials science at Far Eastern Federal University
The discovery suggests that the state of Bohai (698–926) had its own production of bronze items. Ahead lie new excavations: scientists hope to find traces of metallurgical workshops.

🧱 A non-flammable insulation based on peat has been developed in Tomsk
Scientists at Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building have established that adding a fire retardant based on ammonium salts and phosphates (15–18% of the peat's mass) makes the material resistant to open flame. At the same time, it does not lose its thermal insulation properties. The additive forms a protective layer that blocks oxygen access and slows the release of combustible gases.
💬 "Russia has practically inexhaustible reserves of peat, but building materials from it are rarely produced. This is connected precisely with their high flammability" — Dinara Gorkoltseva, Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building

🗺 New coordinates: how "Geography Lessons" is winning over Latin America
Guests in Santiago were struck by the scale of the country, the old maps and the way the railways connected the regions. And also by the unique scents of Russian regions.
💬 "What is especially impressive is how the construction of railways made it possible to connect the entire territory of the country. Without them it would have been impossible to connect settlements located far from one another and to establish the exchange of resources — agricultural and livestock products, natural riches. Russia is huge, and here you can see the most diverse natural zones. It is astonishing and beautiful. I liked it very much!" — Felipe Rencolet, guest of the exposition

🎭 150 years of history, 600 exhibits and 27,000 guests: how the main theatrical anniversary went
The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theatre Workers became a truly large-scale event. At the Bolshoi Theatre, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin presented the organisation with the Order "For Merit in Culture and Art" and announced an important historical decision — the return of the Union's former name, the Russian Theatre Society.
The head of state stressed that today Russian theatre is experiencing a genuine upsurge, and that the state provides funding for around 600 professional theatres across the country.
💬 "Today theatre is becoming even more relevant, and sold-out houses accompany stage productions not only in the capital but in many regional theatres too. I note that the absolute majority of our professional theatres are financed, as I have already said, from budgets — federal, regional or city and municipal. This is extremely important for strengthening the humanitarian and cultural space and the unity of our country. At the same time, we welcome investment by business in theatre projects, of course. Such initiatives undoubtedly deserve systematic support" — Vladimir Putin, President of Russia
The exposition "Heritage. Theatre. Greats", held at the National Centre RUSSIA, became part of the anniversary cycle. Over two months it was visited by more than 27,000 people. Under the motto "A Union of Happy People", it brought together more than 600 unique exhibits from 117 theatre organisations in 29 regions of the country.
Guests were given more than 500 tours and 60 educational events — from meetings with well-known theatre figures to masterclasses in stage machinery.

🏗 How a metro station takes shape: architect Timur Bashkayev reveals the secrets of design
We tend to take the metro for granted. Yet every station involves an enormous amount of work that begins well before the first sketch. Timur Bashkayev, Chief Architect of the Moscow Central Circle, explained this at the historical lecture series "From Imperial Plans to a Digital Future" at the National Centre RUSSIA.
According to the expert, every project rests on three briefs: technological, ideological and economic. First, engineers determine the station's depth and structural design. Then comes ideology — the degree of grandeur and the expectations the city has for the future station. Finally, financial constraints come into play: staying within budget is essential.
💬 "Whether a station reflects its era depends on setting high standards from the outset. When an architect appreciates the project's importance and knows that the city and the entire country support it, they can produce their most expressive and creative work" — Timur Bashkayev, Chief Architect of the Moscow Central Circle
