📚This week we’ve been letting readers know about Dark Waters by @gr_halliday – book two in the DI Monica Kennedy series of psychological thrillers. Here are some of the boxes it ticks that might just put it on your TBR list… ✅Set in the Scottish Highlands – for lovers of Tartan noir!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ✅A dark, foreboding, immersive atmosphere ✅A strong, complex, realistic female lead ✅A brutal, driven killer ✅A layered story, delving into the past If you enjoyed the ITV series The Dark this summer and/or the first novel in the series, From the Shadows, get ready to return to GR Halliday’s chilling world with Dark Waters: link.amazon/B0fA3g3gV

🎉🥃Happy publication day to @gr_halliday – his second DI Monica Kennedy novel, Dark Waters, is out today from @PointBlankCrime.👏📢 There is a harrowing time ahead for Monica – two missing persons and soon one butchered body surfaces in a dam in the Scottish Highlands. Then another. All the while, trauma from Monica’s past lingers like a shadow over the case. If you’ve read From the Shadows, or watched the ITV adaptation as The Dark, you’ll know what we mean. As well as writing crime fiction, GR Halliday is a trained psychotherapist and he uses his understanding of psychology to craft narratives that are genuinely scary, and characters and relationships that readers understand and relate to.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Originally published in 2020, now Dark Waters too can be discovered by a wider audience – ideal for fans of Tartan noir, atmospheric thrillers and strong female lead detectives. 📆Tomorrow sees the release of Dark Waters by @gr_halliday – a psychological thriller set in the Scottish Highlands in which DI Monica Kennedy investigates the case of a dismembered body found in a dam. When another surfaces, the case becomes even more urgent, and more tangled.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Two things stand out to us in GR Halliday’s writing. The first is the atmosphere he builds. Every scene is perfectly described, perfectly poised to hold you in suspense, and the remoteness of the setting and shadowy themes add to the chilling nature of his stories. Within a few pages, the beauty of the Highlands turns brutal and dark. Secondly, DI Monica Kennedy is a fascinating character. She’s a single mother, a single-minded detective, struggles with her past and can be quite self-conscious at times, which makes her seem all the more real. You may have met her in From the Shadows, or in the TV adaptation The Dark. There’s a sense that there are monsters out there, and Monica is one of those protecting us from them. 👀Back in July we got hooked in by @gr_halliday ’s From the Shadows, along with its TV adaptation as The Dark on ITV. Now, DI Monica Kennedy is back in Dark Waters, a new mystery set in the remote wilderness of the Scottish Highlands.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 There are several strands to the creepy storyline as Monica grapples with the case – a woman abducted after a car accident, a missing camper, and most worrying of all a dismembered body found in a dam. The atmosphere GR Halliday conjured in the first novel continues here, as Dark Waters is re-released by @PointBlankCrime on Thursday 24 Sept as a paperback and for #Kindle. All week we’ve been letting readers know about From the Shadows by @gr_halliday. It has already featured heavily on our site with a review and an interview. We’re just really pleased for the author that a book he worked hard on seven or eight years ago is now not just a favourite among UK crime paperbacks but has been turned into a TV series. (See The Dark on ITV.) Running Crime Fiction Lover, we also know that many readers who really love the genre enjoy watching a show and then seeing whether or not the book is better. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! And there’s another DI Monica Kennedy mystery out this September. Hopefully that will become The Dark season 2… Check out From the Shadows here: amzn.to/3RmwFne

It might be #tartannoir but with its cold, damp, dark, remote Highlands setting, From the Shadows by @gr_halliday also feels like #nordicnoir. The setting is key to the atmosphere, and the author lives in the Highlands and knows the climate, the mood and the people that inhabit the area. If you like being drawn into the feeling of a book, into its world, then this is one to try. It’s also the basis of the ITV show The Dark, which is currently airing. Try it here: amzn.to/3RmwFne

🎉👏Today we’re sending our congratulations to @gr_halliday on the republication of his wonderful dark procedural From the Shadows.🥂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Originally released in 2019, it caught some attention, including that of a production company. A bit of time has passed and now the book has been turned into the ITV crime drama, The Dark, which is very faithful to the book. In a remote Highlands community, young men are being murdered and DI Monica Kennedy is trying to track down the killer, while at the same time looking after her young daughter as a single parent. 👀With the World Cup Final on last night (congratulations, Spain) ITV has moved The Dark episode 2 to tonight. But did you know… The show is actually based on the novel From the Shadows by @gr_halliday, a Scottish crime author who lives in the Highlands. It’s as creepy as can be, with a serial killer snatching young men of a certain profile, killing and laying out their bodies in a ritual fashion.
