#NextUNSG | "We are aware that nothing prevents other States or regions from nominating candidates for this high office. However, there is a risk that a criterion and practice (one firmly rooted in the United Nations system and consistently supported by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) might be disregarded." — Uruguay's foreign minister statement on behalf of the 33 Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), regarding the entry of the 🇦🇪UAE's Lana Nusseibeh into the selection process for next UN Secretary-General. #NextUNSG
When Lana Nusseibeh visited a refugee camp in eastern Chad in an attempt to polish her country's image by handing out aid a number of Sudanese refugees refused it outright. They stated they didn't want sacks of flour but for the UAE to stop funding the RSF genocidaires.

Last week in Sudan I interviewed many survivors of violence by the UAE-backed RSF. Harrowing stories. 12yo girl shot in front of her mother. Terrifying, systematic sexual violence. Massacres. Nusseibeh must not be SG if she cannot first admit and condemn the UAE's complicity.
It's official: Lana Nusseibeh, the United Arab Emirates minister of state, has announced her candidacy for the United Nations Secretary-General. She joins a somewhat crowded race of female and male candidates, some whom have already undergone the long interview process.

The biggest question facing her candidacy is Sudan. Does she side with the UN experts who've reported on UAE links to the genocidal Rapid Support Forces, or does she continue to tow the UAE line and deny it (all evidence to the contrary)?
Pretty big deal, as you can imagine this is a candidate who won't get a P5 veto and may strongly be favored by at least one P5 state. Also a real test of the unspoken norms at the UN, where it's supposed to be Latin America's "turn" for SG

Latin American governments have failed to act collectively in response to Trump’s mass deportation campaign, mass murder at sea, or remote-control colonization of Venezuela. It is unlikely leaders will see the UN Secretary-General race as the hill to die on.
“The Latin Americans are going to fight tooth and claw to have one of their own as secretary-general,” said Richard Gowan, a UN expert at the International Crisis Group. “But the veto powers may not care."

I see the protests in France are trending. Since I just spent 10 days there during the heart of them, I figured I'd chime in with what's actually going on. The news and clickbait accounts on X will show you the outlier events: burning buildings, raging violence and everything that triggers you. I was in the heart of Aix en Provence during the biggest protest day and filmed the center where it was happening. (See below) This is right the University, across from the church, dead center of town. The students are dancing, singing, kicking soccer balls and have comically barricaded the entrance doors to force the school to close. I visited many cities in France during the protest period, and saw zero violence or malpractice of any kind. More broadly, I spent more than a month this year in France across 3 trips and 10+ cities, including Paris, Bordeaux, Aix en Provence, Nice, Antibes, Biarritz, and others, and it's incredibly safe, charming, peaceful and beautiful. Every city I visited is nicer than almost every American city, and there's zero comparison. So much that it wouldn't even be insulting to France to try, because nobody who has spent significant time in both countries would take this comparison seriously. I spoke with the students at length about their views. I also spoke with waiters, drivers, merchants, staff and whoever. They were all civil, well articulated and genuinely wanted to see change. We can disagree about their reasoning, logic or whatever, and it's true that France has fiscal problems, but to chalk up the France protests to raging extremist violence from "pick your favorite group to blame", is a laughable misrepresentation of what's actually going on. If you exclusively watch the news and believe the top 1% extreme situations, you have likely been psyoped.

A good explanation of why the case of Congresswoman @Ilhan is a watershed moment for defending democracy in the #USA
It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.
