"Every firefighter is a scientist and a thinker. A lot of people think we just put water on a fire but we have to do a lot of thinking. If I hit the water against this wall, how can I get the most out of this stream of water?" 1/n

"I would change the publication process of science. There's an unequal weight given to positive and negative findings. Right now [journals] disproportinately reward positive findings." 1/n

“Science can be super intimidating. My first Biology 101 exam did not go well & I told myself 'I'm not good at science'. This is a really bad way to think because one exam or one class doesn't define you. Science can be a lot of things, not just photosynthesis and physics." 1/n

“If I were to meet a student that has a passion for science but has little to no confidence in themselves, I would tell them to not let their fears or insecurities stop them. Almost everyone, even very successful scientists, have fears of failure or feel insecure at times." 1/n

"I would tell [non-scientists] that not all scientists are just obsessed with science. There is more to it than just the hard facts and math problems. There are other aspects to it and it's well rounded." 1/n

Working diligently on getting the website up and running so that we, #UNCPsyc530, can share our findings about @UNC_BeAM Makerspace usage on campus. All analysis is done as well as team pictures! Exciting stuff!

"I became really interested in science as a result of high school biology class. What fascinates me most is medical science and how the human body works. In particular, I love immunology." 1/n

"Many people see a select few people as scientists. When people see me, they don't think that I am a scientist or that my job has science involved in it, and I think that's a problem." 1/n

"Science definitely has a cliché. Society's definition of a scientist is a man in a lab coat with chemicals and test tubes. A big part of science is problem solving and being creative to come up with innovative solutions, which is a lot more than just math and equations." 1/n

"Thankfully, where I was people were quite understanding and open-minded. I don't think I got demoted or didn't get projects because I am Christian." 1/n

"What I like about science is that you can find an answer to questions about how things work from the highest level down to minuscule DNA, which is what I work with. I think the expansiveness of science is cool b/c there is something for everyone to be interested in." 1/n

"The type of science I do is computer science, it's not your typical biology or basic study of life, it's the study of technology and how to design different programs that can work for different companies or things of that nature." 1/n

"There are other ways scientists can directly help people through different agencies or industries, helping improve user experience or working in educational institutions, helping people with creative learning or things like that." 1/n

"I think as a woman [in science] it's tricky because you have to walk a certain line. There are expectations and [it's a problem] if you're too matter of fact, like I could say the same thing a man would say but that would be abrasive." 1/n

"I do consider myself a scientist of sorts. I am a maintenance technician and I have to solve problems on a daily basis. To me, a scientist is someone who seeks answers, studies in-depth specific things, and tries to solve problems." 1/n

"When we go do outreach, people can see that we don't all look like Einstein, but that's what kids always draw. When you say draw a scientist they draw Einstein even after they've done an experiment and they're wearing lab coats they say scientists wear." 1/n

"I really love science because it gives me the ability to take a concept at surface level or a general understanding and zoom in to find out more detailed information. I also enjoy learning about all the complex understandings and mechanisms at a microscopic level" 1/n

"I really like being able to capture a memory or scenic view like the bell tower @ sunset, b/c you can keep it & share it with people later. You have to try different angles, lenses, lighting & times of day b/c the light is different, just seeing what makes the best picture." 1/n

"The thing I love about #science and the reason science has always been such a good fit for me is that where there is clarity about a subject it's really clear and where there are still questions to be answered, there is an orderly way to go about finding those answers." 1/n

Now that's November, #UNCPsyc530 will be taking over @Scientists_ofNC's platforms to share interviews with scientists we admire. I had a great interview with my scientist & am looking forward to seeing thought-provoking interviews that challenge what it means to be a scientist.
