Good economics should reach beyond people who have time to read the full paper. @lehanzhang_ built a beautiful interactive guide to our study of how poliricians polarize the public debates following mass shootings.

And Professor Gabrielle Gratton turns the spotlight on the vast sums of money flowing in to politics — and the almost complete absence of research into its impact on our democracy…

What should an open scientific paper look like in the AI age?
We made a demonstration project out of our paper on the childhood socioeconomic circumstances of the Nobel Laureates.
Please check it out and share. Details in 🧵 1/

I picked the wrong subfield of political economy. Documenting corruption doesn't feel relevant. What we need to know is why nobody cares.

Ariell Reshef and I have a new draft out. It is a paper about one figure. From 1850-1970 the employment share of legal services is constant. Between 1970-1990 it doubles, and then stabilizes at the new, higher, level. Lawyers' relative wages exhibit the same trend. What happened?

1/ While many non-political-scientists look askance at political parties, the pol sci literature regards them as vital for making democracies in large societies work. Let me explain why in this 🧵.
First things first: How do we define political parties?

This is a great thread. The political economy literature coming from economists (including myself) definitely understudy the role of parties and political party leaders and party elites

New paper w/ @hannohilbig : we examine how local exposure to the Great Recession affected politics over the long run.
Counties where unemployment rose more in 2007–09 moved toward Democrats, not the populist right. The shift remained visible in 2022.

Great column! Let me take this opportunity to shamelessly promote the review of Dani Rodrik's "Shared Prosperity" that @grattonecon and I wrote earlier this year. Here is the relevant page, which contains references to a number of excellent papers that complement John's points.
New from me:
Until recently, the gap between comfortably-off and just-getting-started could plausibly be crossed in a decade or two of hard work.
Growth in asset prices means that’s no longer true.
