I’m thrilled to be joining the next edition of Local Government Law as a co-author. Excited to be working with Lynn Baker, Clay Gillette, David Schleicher, and (also new to this edition) Nadav Shoked, all of whose work has shaped how so many of us think about the field.

We may soon find out whether states that have a proposition process are a risk to business formation and retention.

🚨 Updated version of Transportation for the Abundant Society (with Jonathan Levine) now posted. It’s our answer to the question, what does “abundance” mean in the context of transportation policy? We think it’s distinct from domains like housing. Feedback welcome.

✈️ If you’re flying today, try airportwtf.com at the airport and let me know what’s missing! I’ve rolled out several updates to this l’il side project since deploying it Friday. The idea is to give flyers the info they actually want. Feedback invited.

This is something different for me. The motivation was to reduce a frustration I often experience, and then I thought, why not push it out into the world? AI makes that possible via vibe coding like this. I’m sure lots could be improved. I’m already addressing some feedback.

There's a limit on how much you can learn from high-density old places like Spain and Sweden, but there is *a lot* to learn from Canada & Australia, which share high automobility, a 20th C built environment, the common law & federal systems—but far lower road mortality per VMT.
“You can’t compare road deaths in the U.S. to others because we drive more!” No, you can. It’s just deaths per billion vehicle miles. If we met the avg of the other countries listed below you would save >19,000 lives per year. 5x that of all fire deaths. And unlike fire deaths many of these are preventable - we know exactly what works. Yet those who claim to speak for public safety are often the largest opponents.

Railroads.
Maybe folks with a better grasp of economic history can help me out, but ... has anything as important to economic growth ever been as demonstrably unpopular as AI? Data center capex is increasing twice as fast as housing before the financial crisis in the 2000s, per Apollo. JFC. But the polling and the politics of data centers is absolutely putrid. It's not just midwestern environmentalists saying no to data centers. NY Gov. Kathy Hochul (who uses AI! and wants Micron to build chips upstate!) declared a moratorium. Texas has frozen new data center projects— Texas! I feel like there are a lot of ppl paying attention to booming AI economics and a lot of people paying attention to folks booing down data centers but not enough thinking about the boom-boo interaction effects
