Fantastic opportunity for doctors around the world! Access to AI via @OpenEvidence and @AnthropicAI can have such an enormous impact in so many populations. Can’t wait to see adoption!
“Medicine is a field where you don't need to squint to see the benefits of AI. It's your mom, it's your dad, it's your sister, it's your brother. And it's the doctors who will care for them in their most vulnerable moments.” Yesterday, during the UN General Assembly, we announced a partnership with @AnthropicAI to make OpenEvidence available free of charge to physicians in low- and middle-income countries, placing life-saving medical AI into the hands of physicians worldwide, regardless of the economics.

Miami has the talent. Let’s put it to work. On October 17, we’re bringing developers, designers, data scientists, and entrepreneurs together at The LAB Miami for the eMerge AI Hackathon 2026. Vibe coders are welcome too! One day to turn an idea into a working AI prototype, with mentors to help you build and a panel of judges ready to see what you create. Three tracks: - Healthcare - Enterprise AI - Finance There will be cash prizes for the top three teams. Cognition is backing our builders with $200 in Devin credits each. Thank you to @cognition, @MiamiDadeCounty, @SylvesterCancer and Archie for supporting this event and the people building Miami’s AI future. Bring a problem worth solving. Find people who see it differently. Build something you’re proud to demo by the end of the day. Let’s show what Miami can build. Join us: luma.com/aihackathon26 @dabit3 @thelabmiami @ayalstern @melmedina305 @miamiaihub @eMergeAmericas

Today, we’re bringing ChatGPT closer to the systems, information, and workflows healthcare teams already rely on. ♥️ We’re introducing a new EHR integration to connect supported Epic environments to ChatGPT and a plugin connecting to nine additional industry data sources.

AI is changing not only how we search for antibiotics, but increasingly how we design them. Our latest piece is out in @CellBiomat @CellPressNews. We examine how AI is reshaping antibiotic discovery, from machine learning for screening and optimization to protein language models, graph neural networks, and generative approaches for de novo antimicrobial design. With antimicrobial resistance continuing to outpace antibiotic discovery, the opportunity is bigger than searching faster. These tools can help us navigate chemical and biological space more systematically, connect computation with experiment, and find molecules we might otherwise miss. A wonderful collaboration with Jing Xu, Chen Li, Xiaoyu Wang, Anton Y. Peleg, @lifuyi1991, @supercs08, and colleagues across @MonashUni and @Penn, including @CBE_Penn, @PennBioeng, @PennEngineers, @PennMedicine, @PennChemistry, @PennMicro, @PennPsych, and @PennSAS. NEW: AI is on track to write nearly 1 in 3 medical SOAP notes. SOAP notes are the standard way clinicians document patient visits, covering history, findings, assessment, and plan. Clinical documentation remains one of healthcare AI’s fastest-growing use cases.

Mitochondria are descendants of bacteria. Could their own genomes still encode molecules with antimicrobial activity? In our new work, we used AI to explore over 2,000 ancient human mitochondrial genomes and identify previously hidden peptide sequences with antibacterial potential. We call these molecules mitochondrins. Experimental testing showed that several mitochondrins are active against clinically relevant bacteria, including drug-resistant strains. They display distinct mechanisms of action, and a representative peptide reduced A. baumannii burden in a mouse infection model. Intriguingly, several active sequences are perfectly conserved in modern human mitochondrial DNA. The broader question is perhaps the most interesting: could the mitochondrial genome itself represent a previously underexplored layer of human innate immunity? We do not yet know whether mitochondrins are naturally produced or deployed during infection. Establishing that will require further work. But our results provide a biochemical basis for testing the idea that mitochondrial genomes may contribute directly to host defense. More broadly, this study reflects a direction we are deeply interested in: using AI to interrogate biological information across evolutionary time—not simply to catalog what is there, but to uncover function. The code of life contains far more functional information than we currently understand. Machines can help us begin to read it. Great team work @mdt_torres, Abdullah Ali, Hyun-Su Lee, Fangping Wan, @Penn, @CBE_Penn, @PennBioeng, @PennEngineers, @PennMedicine, @PennChemistry, @PennMicro, @PennPsych, @PennSAS! AI’s healthcare moonshot is clinical care. But near-term ROI is in shared services. McKinsey says AI-enabled workflow redesign could drive 25–50% productivity gains across HR, RCM, finance, legal, marketing, patient access, etc. Don’t forget: task automation matters, but a lot of the value here comes from rethinking the workflow itself.

Miami turns 130 today. On July 28, 1896, 368 men crowded into The Lobby, a pool hall near the Miami River, to create a city. They cast 344 votes. The group included 162 Black men, many of them laborers who helped build the railroad and the young settlement, alongside merchants, farmers, tradesmen and railroad workers. Long before incorporation, the Tequesta lived along these waters. Modern Miami took shape because a few stubborn people believed an unlikely place could become a great American city. Julia Tuttle relentlessly pushed Henry Flagler to bring his railroad south. Mary Brickell backed the effort with her land and business savvy. Flagler laid the tracks. The railroad arrived in April. By July, they had incorporated a city. That is an astonishing amount of ambition packed into a few months. Miami was a gritty startup city before anyone used the term. There was no guarantee it would work. Just heat, mosquitoes, hard work and people willing to make an enormous bet on the future. Happy 130th birthday Miami!

This stands out: The governance split, with @MayoClinic keeping ownership of the model and @Microsoft handling distribution via Azure Foundry. It's a multimodal healthcare-native model, not retrofitted. And it's validated inside Mayo's live clinical environment first.

One place to look for this is the collaboration between the Mayo Clinic and Microsoft: they are developing a purpose-built, native multimodal AI model, natively trained on diverse healthcare datasets, including structured clinical data, longitudinal patient records, genomic information, and radiology images. It has specific healthcare domain knowledge and data ownership to ensure privacy and security. @MayoClinic @MayoPlatform @Microsoft @MicrosoftAI @mattredlon
