In 1977, Iranian Islamists and leftists joined forces in Paris to bring down the Shah.
Two of my uncles took opposite roads for the same revolution. One was a radical Maoist who went to China to learn to handle a weapon so he could bring down the monarchy. The other went to Paris to study, where he became a radical Khomeinist.
Fresh out of the Maoist camps, my communist uncle moved to Paris in 1978 to join his brother.
Once the clerics had seized total power, they put him and his comrades against the wall of a white-tiled room and executed them. In the following years, thousands of communists who had believed they were using the Khomeinists for their agenda learned how naive they were. The regime sent my family photographs of my uncleโs bullet-riddled body. The family had to pay so-called bullet money before they were allowed to bury him. I found the pictures years later, snooping through my motherโs things.
My zealous uncle went to war, leading one of the units the regime sent into Saddam Husseinโs minefields. The Islamic Republic sent young boys ahead of them as human mine-clearers, plastic keys to paradise dangling from their necks. My uncle stepped on a mine and came home in a small box.

What Israel did in Gaza may well go down in history as the most humane and precise urban warfare environment the world has ever knownโthe very opposite of genocide.
The entire purpose of a genocide is to push civilians into the killing zone.
Think about what happened in the Holocaust, where children in line at Auschwitz were given bars of soap, where inside of the gas chambers there were fake shower heads.
What was the point?
It was to trick and induce civilians to get in to the killing zone so that you could kill more of them more efficiently over time.
Israel has done the very oppositeโwarning civilians and then manning humanitarian corridors with its own soldiers, risking its own sonsโ and daughtersโ lives to ensure that civilians get out of the killing zone.
We see two remarkable things in Gaza.
First, according to preeminent urban warfare scholars like John Spencer, Richard Kemp, and Andrew Fox, Israel has the lowest militant-to-civilian kill ratio in the history of urban warfare.
Genocides have extreme civilian-to-militant kill ratios. Hundred, thousand, ten thousand-to-one. Thatโs the point of a genocide.
Here we have a militant-to-civilian kill ratio of may be two-to-oneโnot consistent not just with law of war violationsโbut much less with genocide.
Second, and more importantly, all genocidal regimes get better over time at killing civilians.
Again, think about the Holocaust. The Nazis started with firing squads killing 20, 30, 50 people at a time and realized that was too inefficient. Then they got these vans and filled them with exhaust pipes, and they would kill more people. And they said, โWeโre never going to get to six million killing them this way.โ That led them to construct these massive gas chambers and crematoriaโthe architecture of true genocideโto kill thousands and thousands of people cheaply and efficiently a day.
Israel has done the opposite.
Even if you believe Hamasโ numbers, the scale of civilian death in Gaza went down over time. Israel got better and better and spent hundreds of millions of shekels learning how to become more efficient at preserving innocent Palestiniansโ lives.
Again, the very opposite of genocide.

1. Legal Defense and Judicial Impartiality
Deuteronomy demands a legal system that cannot be manipulated by the rich and powerful against the common citizen.
โข Impartiality at the Gates: Local judges are commanded to hear cases fairly. Deuteronomy 16:18-19 states: "Appoint judges and officials... and they shall judge the people fairly. Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe..."
โข Equal Protection under the Law: The law explicitly protects those who do not have tribal status or family advocates. Deuteronomy 24:17 commands, "Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge."
โข Cursing Corporate Injustice: In a formal covenant ceremony, a specific curse is laid out for systemic failure: "Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow" (Deuteronomy 27:19).
2. Economic Defense Against Exploitation
The text creates concrete safety nets to defend the common laborer and the destitute from financial ruin.
โข Protection of Day Laborers: Wealthy landowners are forbidden from withholding wages, recognizing that the common worker relies on immediate pay to survive. Deuteronomy 24:14-15 mandates, "Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy... Pay them their wages each day before sunset..."
โข Dignity in Debt: If a common person must borrow money, creditors are blocked from predatory tactics. A creditor is strictly forbidden from entering a debtorโs house to seize collateral (Deuteronomy 24:10), preserving the poor person's dignity and protecting their home from violation.
3. Physical Defense and Community Intervention
Deuteronomy also establishes principles of physical defense and collective security for individuals under attack.
โข The Obligation to Rescue: In Deuteronomy 22:23-27, the law deals with physical assault. It notes that if a person is attacked in an isolated area (the open country), the law presumes they cried out for help but "there was no one to rescue" them. The underlying legal assumption is that if anyone had been within earshot, they would have had a strict moral and community obligation to intervene and physically defend the victim.

โข State run education
โข Emphasis on the collective (โcommon good before individual goodโ) over individual rights.
Nationalist policies:
โข Secure/Closed borders.

The left has consistently been on the wrong side of history for at least the past 100 years.
