The uranium in the Hiroshima bomb.
Shinkolobwe mine. Belgian Congo.
The uranium that ended World War II and inaugurated the nuclear age and gave the United States its defining geopolitical advantage for the following decade:
Came from African ground.
Mined by African labor.
Under Belgian colonial administration.
The Congolese miners who extracted it had no idea what it was for.
They received no benefit from what it produced.
The geopolitical order it enabled, American dominance, the Cold War architecture, the entire post-war system under which African independence was managed and constrained:
Was built in part on Congolese uranium.
And then that same geopolitical order looked at the Congo and saw a country that needed to be guided toward development.
The country that provided the material for the weapon that shaped the world was then subjected to the world the weapon shaped.
Without acknowledgment.
Without compensation.
Without a single line in American education connecting Shinkolobwe to Hiroshima to the Cold War to Mobutu to the Congo today.
The lines exist.
They are documented.
They are simply not drawn in the curriculum.
Because drawn lines connect causes to effects.
And connected causes and effects produce accountability.

BREAKING: Pete Hegseth PUNISHES the poor sailor who jumped off a US Navy ship -- AND his family -- in a heartless show of cruelty and spite!
Nicholas McKelvey was just 19 years old when he reached the end of his rope aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.
He had spent 255 grueling days at sea, working 12-hour shifts in punishing heat, often without enough food, while his wife struggled to raise their children back home.
He had missed the birth of his baby daughter. His mother-in-law was in treatment for cancer. And when he sought help for his deteriorating mental health, he says the Navy directed him to a chaplain instead of a mental health professional.
Then, one August morning, McKelvey ran across the flight deck and plunged 67 feet into the Arabian Sea.
A helicopter crew rescued him. But instead of treating his desperate act as a mental health emergency, the Navy accused him of FAKING his crisis to escape deployment.
And on Thursday, the Navy moved to discharge him under conditions that will cost him his G.I. Bill education benefits โ the very benefits he and his wife had been counting on to build a better life for their children.
โThey'd rather blame the victim,โ his wife, Samantha Larry, told The NYT.
McKelvey and Larry have been together since middle school. They became parents as teenagers, dropped out of high school and married last year. He joined the Navy in 2024 in hopes of giving his family some sort of stable future.
What he found instead was life aboard an aircraft carrier whose deployment stretched to a near-record 322 days as the war with Iran dragged on. Food supplies dwindled. Contact with home became difficult. McKelvey told his wife he wasn't sure he could finish the deployment.
โI didn't want to be there anymore,โ he told the Times. โIf I was going to die because of it, then that's just how it is.โ
McKelvey was not alone in his existential angst. According to the Navy's own report to Congress, there were EIGHT suicide attempts among sailors in the Lincoln strike group during the deployment.
The Navy maintains that McKelvey deliberately jumped overboard to get out of his duties. Its records note that he wore a flotation vest and jumped when the sea was relatively calm. But one officer acknowledged in a report that the deployment had been so difficult it was โunsurprising that we might have a jumper.โ
Now McKelvey and his wife are preparing to return to Florida with their 3-year-old son and 8-month-old daughter. They're staying with relatives and in temporary rental housing while they figure out how to support their family.
โWe're going to have to pull out student loans,โ Larry said. โIt is essentially setting us up for just putting us in debt.โ
The Navy kept these sailors at sea for nearly 11 months, sent them into a war zone, worked them through punishing conditions and watched their mental health deteriorate. Eight suicide attempts in a single strike group should have set off every alarm in the Pentagon.
Even if every day of that deployment was militarily necessary, the sacrifices these sailors made deserve recognition, compassion and care.
Instead, when one 19-year-old father finally broke, the Navy accused him of faking it and took away the college benefits he had earned his family's hopes on.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth loves to preach his โwarrior ethos,โ but what kind of warrior culture treats a sailor's psychological collapse as a disciplinary problem rather than a human emergency?
McKelvey gave the Navy everything he had until he had nothing left to give. Now the institution he served is sending him home to his wife and two small children with fewer opportunities than he had when he enlisted.
If this is how America repays the sacrifices of its young service members, the Pentagon has a great deal more to worry about than its recruiting numbers.

Israelโs far-right National Security Minister in Netanyahuโs government, Itamar Ben-Gvir, is seeking to strip Arab citizens of their right to vote, declaring:
โToday, more than ever, it must be made clear: the right to vote must not be granted to anyone who does not openly declare allegiance to the State of Israel.โ
Ben-Gvir went on to boast:
โI am proud that I have turned the lives of Palestinians in prison into hell. I am proud of passing the death penalty law for Palestinian prisoners . I am proud that, over the past year and a half, I have overseen the demolition of 10,000 buildings deemed illegal in the Negev. I am proud of creating massive deterrence, and proud of arming settlers in Israel against the enemies.โ

The British starved Ireland and then cited Irish poverty as evidence of Irish inferiority.
The Belgians extracted the Congoโs resources for a century and then cited Congolese underdevelopment as evidence that Africans needed to be governed.
The Americans sanctioned Cuba for 66 years and then cited Cuban economic difficulties as evidence that socialism doesnโt work.
The structure is the same.
It has always been the same.
You remove the conditions necessary for success.

You point.

The only thing that changes across centuries and continents is whoโs being pointed at.

Last month Radwan Mortada exposed Israelโs pager attack, in Al Jazeeraโs most watched film in recent history.
2 weeks ago Israeli troops looted his house and blew it up.
This week they were caught bugging his phone for the 3rd time.
This is how Israel responds to factual journalism:
Yesterday, I received a security notification from Apple warning me that my iPhone had been targeted by a sophisticated mercenary spyware attack, involving technology of the kind developed by companies such as NSO Group, the Israeli firm behind the notorious Pegasus spyware.
Perhaps the most alarming aspect of Appleโs warning was its confirmation that such attacks target specific individuals โbecause of who you are or what you do.โ
This is not the first time I have been targeted by spyware. I was previously targeted with Pegasus in both 2017 and 2021.
I do not yet know who is behind this latest attack, or whether it is connected to my investigative documentary, The Trap, which I directed and co-produced. The film, available on Al Jazeera 360, exposed the details of the September 2024 pager explosions in Lebanon.
What is certain, however, is that the targeting of journalists with sophisticated spyware poses a grave threat to press freedom, the confidentiality of journalistic sources, and the very foundations of independent investigative journalism.
