The Forgotten Gear That Came Before Antikythera
A few years ago I was in the history museum in Olbia, Sardinia, when I came across this little fragment. I almost walked past it. I never see it discussed, but it feels important.Everyone knows the Antikythera Mechanism — the 2,000-year-old Greek “computer” recovered from a shipwreck. A common line is that nothing else like it has ever been found. This gear says otherwise.
It was excavated in Olbia in 2006. Brass. Originally about 43 mm across with an estimated 55 teeth. Dated to the late 3rd or mid-2nd century BCE — older than the Antikythera device.Same precision gearing. Same Hellenistic world.
It is not a missing piece of the Antikythera Mechanism. Those fragments are all in Athens. This is a separate find. What it suggests is that the famous machine was not a one-off miracle. There was almost certainly a line of advanced geared technology that led to it.Ancient engineering was more sophisticated — and more widespread — than we used to think.#AncientHistory #Archaeology #Antikythera #Hellenistic #AncientTechnology
