Benchmarking Frontier LLMs on Chess
Over the weekend I built a series of evals to understand how language models reason about endgames, tactics, and full chess games against strong opponents. Turns out they are getting pretty good!

some people are using Hanging Piece regularly using this trick but they haven't signed up yet. 💔
kinda proud, kinda hurt 😅
sitting next to a cute girl on plane?
here's what you do 👇
instead of saying "hi", say "e4", and when she goes "huh", you reply "oh you're so cute i couldn't help but make my move"
most chess analysis tools:
+1.7, best move was qf6
mehh 🥱
Hanging Piece: you hung a knight because you got excited about attacking and forgot their bishop exists

or chess69.com, if you're feeling lucky, 😉

got my first user feedback email for @hangingpiece yesterday:
"Too much text. I felt confused while reading. Even the summary seems hard to follow and I gave up in the middle."
and today i redesigned the AI Coach from scratch.
now every blunder breaks down into 3 focused sections
1. big picture
2. why this failed
3. better plan
plus a one-line lesson to remember like "In the endgame, the king is a powerful piece, but moving it into the line of fire can lead to devastating material loss."
