Being a Roma fan is like always being on standby for First Class, but instead flying Economy Plus every damn time.

This guy. He didn't spend any time in the final weeks of the campaign speaking about the economy, or to people's concerns about the Iran war. Instead, he lectured people who rightfully thought that Ramaswamy's ad was disgusting, and he leveled racist attacks against AES. Loser.
One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

One thing that people who never have seen late career Bob Dylan can never understand is how sometime around 2024 Under the Red Sky started rocketing up your list of all time favorite Dylan songs...

First we build a statue for Jalen, then we build a statue for Joyce.
parallel with the Knicks' extraordinary penchant for magically rallying, coming-up-from-behind to triumph at virtually the last minute was the weirdly fascinating drama of "Wemby" on the court distinctive not only by his height but the thinness of his body which appeared, beside his teammates, almost pre-pubescent, lacking maturity. no matter where you looked, there was always "Wemby" charging about anticipating an opening to shove, push someone with a solid adult body with a baby-faced look of insouciance: "Who? Me? I' m just a kid."

Just started Norman Maclean’s A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT tonight. Staggeringly beautiful writing.

Tried this out, and my Phillies are in a rain delay. While I don't mind continuing to blast Drive-By Truckers, I'm starting to think this might not be our year.
Summer is for drinking beer and watching baseball and listening to the Drive-By Truckers

There should be a rule against hitting someone's 1st MLB pitch for a home run. 🧑‍⚖️

NFL draft nerds, how did my Saints do with this Jordan Tyson pick?

There is a certain romance in supporting AS Roma, even if we know that it’s foolish to expect a Totti or De Rossi type bandiera each decade. Still, I don’t know man. It feels a bit gross to see Claudio Ranieri pushed aside and see Gasperini in complete control of the club.

Periodically checking in on @MatthewSitman's timeline for his reaction to the announcement of JD Vance's "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith."

It's so goddamn funny that Bari Weiss was touting CBS's "scoops" a week ago today and LED with Trump telling them that the war is "very much complete." How's that going?

Here is where Harper goes wrong, and gives into to the ridiculous reactionary impulse. Even within his article he states that not all of the 500mm is going to waste. But the second he recieves pushback on his article, he digs in and shits on the whole Foundation. Not great...
Amusing watching self-described leftists leap to the defense of a billion-dollar nonprofit created by Robber Baron Kids and helmed by an Obama-world Ivy Leaguer that plies 500 million annually in the service of economically-defanged identity mumbo jumbo in revolutionary garb.

He would have thrown 7 interceptions
Would have been fun to watch Josh Allen against this defense.

A reminder, as we all try to grasp another killing by federal agents on the streets of Minneapolis, that several Democrats, including moderate media darlings, decided to give ICE another $10 billion.

Absolutely wild that Lowry comes to this conclusion watching even a slowed down video of the murder. Just a soulless individual who does not fear God.
Always perilous judging by video clips, but this looks like a lawful shooting that isn’t prosecutable. The officer will have a good case he was in fear of his life, even if in retrospect it looks like he could have gotten out of the way It doesn’t look to me like she was *deliberately* trying to run him over, but she defied officer orders and accelerated at an officer This is a tragedy and she created the predicate for it. DON’T CHASE AND OBSTRUCT LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, DON’T DEFY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, DON’T FLEE THE SCENE OR ACT RECKLESSLY AFTER OFFICERS HAVE ORDERED YOU TO DO SOMETHING. These are very good rules for avoiding these fraught, dangerous circumstances in the first place

I like Wilfried Nancy a lot. I like his style of play. But is it any surprise that a guy who managed at mid-table for most of his career and repeatedly crashed out of the playoffs in a dogshit MLS is struggling as he stepped up to a more challenging job? Not to me.
