To understand our culture, you must understand that, in most cases, thinking deeply and creatively is a hindrance, not an aid to social success. The most successful people parrot and do not question the consensus. The people you think of as authorities: your doctor, your political leaders, even many pastors, did not get where they are by asking deep questions, but by repeating the answers they were given.

"The unavailability of others is so disturbing, so disabling that our only defense is to become unavailable ourselves. Even if an available person is never called upon to help, their latent availability nonetheless improves the atmosphere for everyone present. It is far more pleasant to share a space with someone who, however subtly, acknowledges that you exist." lithub.com/why-we-should-all…

"The myth of technological and political and social inevitability is a powerful tranquilizer of the conscience. Its service is to remove responsibility from the shoulders of everyone who truly believes in it." — Joseph Weizenbaum, Computer Power and Human Reason
We tried to warn the world and far too often, to be frank, we were yelled at for doing so. “Regulatory capture,” “marketing hype,” “doomer anxiety,” “fear-mongering about open source,” “why don’t you talk about the benefits?”

Every year I share this, For those of you that haven't seen it before it was drawn by my Dad, Who was there, Not digging for coal, But digging for children, This is his abiding memory of that day, He will never forget, And neither should we. #Aberfan60 #CofiwchAberfan

This comment gets to the heart of the problem with AI translation; it's not that AI has actually got much better at translating, it's just that it *sounds* better and has got better at fooling the unwary bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1wx…

The problem of our time is not merely information overload. It is that the time required to construct a coherent understanding of reality is becoming longer than the time during which that understanding remains valid.

Laughing and crying in archivist. If only.
Il mio sogno proibito al momento è trovare un posto d'archivista e seppellirmi per vent'anni tra carte più vecchie di me fino alla pensione. Un lavoro inutile, solitario e inattuale, che mi farebbe, proprio per questo, immensamente felice.

The power of primary sources.
My wife found an 11-year-old girl's diary at the antique store. She read me an entry from 1957 in which the girl writes: “I didn't go to school today because of my feet. I've been soaking them all day.” Now my wife and I are crying.

Especially if you're single. Why is my mother less important to society than some live-in rando I met two years ago whom I could put on my insurance with no problem. This would change my mother's life.
One of the things I’d love addressed by law is the inability to add your parents to your company health insurance scheme. Once they are senior citizens, you should be able to treat them as your dependents in every single way including being able to add them to your insurance
