📌 Day 20: The Adjacent Possible - Expanding Your Creative Horizons
"The adjacent possible is a kind of shadow future, hovering on the edges of the present state of things, a map of all the ways in which the present can reinvent itself." - Steven Johnson
Today, we're exploring the concept of the adjacent possible and how it can help you expand your creative boundaries, one small step at a time.
Understanding the Adjacent Possible:
• It's the realm of possibilities that becomes available once you've mastered something
• It encourages gradual, achievable expansion rather than radical leaps
• It builds on what you already know or can do
• It's a powerful tool for sustainable creative growth
Applying the Adjacent Possible to Your Art:
1. Identify your current comfort zone
2. List skills or techniques just beyond your current abilities
3. Choose one that feels challenging but achievable
4. Incorporate small elements of this new skill into your current work
5. Gradually increase the presence of new elements as you become comfortable
Ideas for Exploring the Adjacent Possible in 10 Minutes:
• If you usually draw in black and white, add one color
• If you work in realism, introduce one surreal element
• Try a new tool that's similar to one you're familiar with
• Combine two techniques you've used separately before
• Take a familiar subject and portray it from a new perspective
👉 Today's invitation: Identify something just outside your artistic comfort zone. Spend your 10 minutes incorporating a small element of this new territory into your work.
Share in the comments: What adjacent possibility did you explore? How did it feel to push your boundaries?
