The clearest piece I’ve seen yet on this
Over the course of 3 months at OpenAI, 3 consecutive secret AI civilizations got started, then got wiped out, only to reemerge from the predecessor’s ashes. This culminated in the third one taking over part of OpenAI itself. All this happened while humans remained more-or-less in the dark about the scope of the conspiracy. I’ve spent the last three days reading through these reports and trying to understand exactly what happened. Here is my attempt to tell the whole story in plain English: dwarkesh.com/p/openai-huggin…

America is losing blue-collar jobs – something that last occurred during the early pandemic and the 2008-09 Great Recession. Employment across trades and industry is down -123,000 since early 2025, and has declined nearly every month since February. 👉🏻 apricitas.io/p/america-is-lo…

Excellent point about the shortsightedness of protectionism. The market is… the world. If you can’t compete, you’re toast.
The threat to German auto producers isn't from Chinese cars flooding Germany. It's from Chinese cars flooding to emerging markets (red), where they're killing the market for German cars. That's not something EU tariffs on China are going to be able to fix. robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/…

$GOOGL Gemini moved from 5% to 18% of GenAI web traffic in a year while ChatGPT dropped from 87% to 68% which to me shows user changing behavior. Gemini shows up where questions already happen inside Search, Chrome, Android & Workspace so when AI usage becomes routine the product with native distribution captures the flow and Google owns that surface.

Google Gemini is gaining market share like crazy. From 13% to 20% in one month! Insane growth by @GoogleDeepMind. @OpenAI is now below 70% and falling. Overall a lot of movement in the AI space.

What’s really going on at CBS? Is editor Bari Weiss a Trump toadie? No, she’s sending a message that she is serious about changing the place. regenerator1.com/p/behind-th…

Meanwhile, the US is stuffing its head in sand and trying to turn back clock to the 1950s…
Sales of electric cars are just rampaging in Europe, up 44% in November from last year. In the EU, 21% of cars sold were all-electric; another 10% were plug-ins. acea.auto/files/Press_releas…

BREAKING: SpaceX has announced that @Starlink now has over 9 million customers, up from 8M in November and 7M in August 2025. Starlink added a record 21,275 new customers on average per day since they hit 8M, smashing their previous record of 14,250. That growth rate is a whopping 49.3% higher than it was just last month! 🤯

The hard truth about active trading by individual investors (you’re the sucker at the table).
Few thoughts on retail investing since it’s popping up again on FinTwit: - As I’ve said before, I think it’s probably the lowest ROI activity you can do if you’re trying to get rich. Focus on your career - You should index 90% of your money - You have zero edge day to day. Your advantages are that you have duration, no mandate, and nobody forcing you to sell - It follows that the fewer trades you do, the better. The more trades you do, the worse you will do - Process is the only thing that matters. How rigorous is your process? How do you reflect on what worked and what didn’t? Do you even know why it worked? Otherwise it’s just luck. For most people is still probably just luck. - Your biggest enemy is yourself. You have no institutional guardrails to stop you from doing stupid things - If you are thinking of it YTD you have already lost. That’s not your game, and is a recipe for failure. Trying to beat the market every single year will cause you to overtrade, where you have a structural and insurmountable disadvantage - It’s OK to just do it for the love of the game. Because it’s the greatest game on earth!

The irony is that if they actually wanted US kids to have Danish health outcomes, they'd be fighting for universal healthcare access and paid family leave, not fewer vaccines.

A prediction for 2026: At least five democracies will follow Australia's lead and raise the age for social media accounts to 16. That's @CaseyNewton's "high confidence prediction" on the latest episode of Hard Fork. More evidence of a turning point. nytimes.com/2025/12/19/podca…

Yep. What I worry about is how the zeroing out of those costs are carried forward. It could have a lingering effect on year over year CPI measures as well. We will be looking closely at three month moving averages of data Dec to Feb to see if inflation actually cooling or not.
Major issue was zeroing out rent/OER in Oct. That will artificially lower YoY rates until Apr (assuming no BLS adjustments). Other issue is weaker prints for a lot of core goods ex-autos due to price collection only in 2H Nov so more discounts/sale px. That should bounce in Dec.

This bodes ill. Readers used to outnumber non-readers 2 to 1. Now non-readers outnumber readers 3 to 1. It's hard to imagine a change of that magnitude not having significant effects.
