Replying to @andyburnham
Britain is caught in a tightening snare. Every increase in energy, water, housing, food and care costs pulls it tighter. The triple lock is like passing food and water to pensioners caught inside it: essential for keeping them alive, but it does nothing to release the mechanism. @andyburnham argument is right! The government must loosen the snare itself, through public control of essential services, social housing, affordable care, restored trade with Europe and stronger growth. Otherwise, we condemn every generation to an increasingly desperate struggle to survive inside the same trap.

I want to be honest about how we’ve got to a place where British billpayers are paying some of the highest energy costs in Europe. Over the past 40 years, we’ve given up control of our necessities, outsourced our essentials and privatised the basics. Water, transport, housing. And of course, energy. Now the public are paying the price. We haven’t invested in the infrastructure we need. Conflict overseas has pushed up energy costs and it’s hurting our businesses and families. That’s why we need to take back greater control of our energy system. This week, I announced Great British Grid, which will speed up connections and push down bills. We’re also giving mayors, local leaders and communities a stronger role. With funding for People’s Power projects, communities will be able to build solar panels on libraries and town halls, hydro schemes in rivers or publicly owned windfarms on local land. But it’s not just energy we need stronger public control over. It’s also water, housing, transport and care. So we’re repealing the ban on public ownership of water companies. We’re building more council homes than this country has seen since the end of World War Two. We’re reforming the leasehold system so families aren’t squeezed for every penny. And we’re opening up home ownership for first time buyers who can’t rely on the bank of mum and dad. This week I also announced my determination to introduce a National Care Service, to put people above profit and to give pensioners peace of mind. Together, we’ll rewire the country from top to bottom so that it works for all people in all places. That is the only way to put Britain back on the right path. It’s the only way to put power back in people’s hands. And it’s the only way we will bring hope again.

🚨 This is extraordinarily serious. Trump isn’t just rejecting the ICC’s jurisdiction over Americans: he is threatening banks, insurers, technology companies and other suppliers with secondary sanctions simply for enabling the court to function. This is an attempt to destroy an international legal institution through American financial power. The message to Britain is nakedly coercive: because the UK benefits from US military protection and law enforcement cooperation, Washington expects it to abandon the ICC. @andyburnham now faces a defining test on whether Britain defends international law alongside out European allies or capitulates to Trump. This exposes the strategic cost of Brexit. Outside the EU, Britain is more isolated and therefore more susceptible to American pressure. Brexit has left us with less collective power to resist a US president demanding obedience.

🚨IT’S BEEN DESCRIBED AS STATE SPONSORED TORTURE - AND ITS HAPPENING IN THIS COUNTRY - RIGHT NOW. It’s one of the most cruel, inhumane and monumental injustices of the past half-century - and yet incomprehensibly it’s been allowed to continue under a Labour government. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST SHOCKING FILMS YOU WILL WATCH AND THIS IS HOW YOU CAN HELP - Campaign group @UNGRIPP have launched an IPP constituency map to demonstrate the national scale of IPP injustice and to help visualize the urgent demand for IPP reform. You can use this link to show the strength of feeling about this obscene injustice in your constituency and send an email directly to your local MP. It only takes a moment. HELP US TO END THIS MONUMENTAL INJUSTICE ONCE AND FOR ALL #IPPscandal

Let’s call this bull**** out TOGETHER The 200,000 illegal migrants figure Farage is using is over several years and let’s remind ourselves how we got into this mess in the first place - BREXIT And now in threatening to punish those parts of the country where people don’t vote his way the Reform party leader is betraying the basic principles of democracy - its shameless and grotesque bullying which shows nothing but contempt for voters

🤪 Trump supporter asked to name Trump’s greatest achievement. Apparently America has secretly been under British rule for the last 125 years, King Charles went over to manipulate Trump and Trump has finally liberated the United States. 🇬🇧🇺🇸🤣 “You just gon have to research just like I did. It’s true.” Brexiters blame the EU for everything Trumpers blame Britain for everything wrong with America. 🇬🇧🤝🇺🇸 Different countries. Same populist playbook: Find an external enemy. Blame them for your problems. Promise to take back control. Just bonkers.

✅ Always read beyond the headline. The Times declares: *Net zero rush fails to cut energy bills.* The honest headline would be: *Britain’s broken electricity market prevents consumers benefiting fully from cheaper renewable power.* Yet the article confirms (see continuation in next tweet) that gas used to set Britain’s electricity price about 90% of the time and now does so around 60%, with a further fall expected by 2030. Even Civitas’s own report author says bills can be reduced without prejudicing net zero, through better planning, regulatory reform and intelligent use of Britain’s energy resources. So the real story is not that renewable energy has failed. It is that Britain’s broken market still allows expensive gas to determine the price even when cheaper renewable electricity is generating and governments have loaded infrastructure and policy costs onto bills. Fix the market. Build the grid and storage. Stop using net zero as a scapegoat for decades of political failure.

✅ Brexit was sold as taking back control. ❌ Instead, Britain joined CPTPP and signed investment treaties that allow qualifying foreign corporations to bypass our courts and sue governments through ISDS. That threatens democratic action on water, energy, food standards, climate and strategic infrastructure. The global Stop ISDS campaign has the right answer: stop signing new corporate-court agreements, renegotiate or cancel existing ones, neutralise their sunset clauses and build a coalition of governments prepared to leave together. Foreign investors deserve due process and lawful compensation. They do not deserve a privileged legal system unavailable to British citizens, farmers and businesses. Andy Burnham says he wants to end neoliberalism. Dismantling ISDS must be part of it. Global days of action: 15–17 October 2026 👀 🔗 stopisds.global/en/
