First of Kind: The @rauchg interview Season 3 starts now. I sat down with Guillermo in San Francisco to talk about layout shift, random acts of AI, and a dragon painted in a single stroke. 00:00 Human Effort Is Still Underrated 00:44 Chief Executive, Chief Designer 02:33 Two Bets: Software and English 05:15 Gmail Was My Siren Call 11:06 Exposure Hours 14:49 Layout Shift / One Stroke Dragon 17:10 No Random Acts of AI 25:17 Can Agents Have Taste? 30:15 Software Factories and Manufacturing Agent Customers 34:59 Everything Is Communication 38:04 A New American Story 41:52 Lifemaxxing Guillermo Rauch is the founder and CEO of @vercel. Growing up in Argentina, he taught himself English in order to teach himself programming, then went on to create @nextjs and other foundational technology for the real-time web. In our conversation, Guillermo explains why he designed Vercel’s first command line before writing any code, why layout shift erodes trust, and why his company won’t commit any “random acts of AI.” G is not just a chief executive. He’s a chief designer. — Guillermo Rauch: One Stroke Dragon First of Kind, S3:E01 @firstofkind Hosted by @soleio and produced with @room3nyc Powered by our sponsors: @framer @noondesign @bot @tryramp @vercel @meetgranola @profound

Instinct and Muse were great at helping me. Wabi is great at helping all of us. That difference ended up mattering way more than I thought
Wabi 2.0 is live! personal agents are one person, one chat. but the parts of life that matter run on more than one person Wabi is an agent you use together. you talk to it, it does stuff, builds the apps you need, and anyone can join the thread - your partner, your best friend, the preschool moms groupchat school changes pickup time → Wabi updates the family calendar, everyone sees it. a show you’d both love → Wabi finds a night that works, gets the tickets. the trip everyone keeps talking about → Wabi picks the dates, builds the itinerary, books it go start a thread with your people 👇

Multiplayer agents as group chat seems quite inevitable and Wabi's built it

It's been so fun to figure out how to make an assistant useful and fun when you are with other people. I've bee creating, planning, teaching, and memeing since we got it working. We're live and open. See you in there.

There's something very familiar and yet very novel about using Wabi. The Mac app has become such a perfect extension of what makes Wabi fun and useful. Send me a DM so I can invite you to try.

For me, I ship 1 pr a week with 100,000 unrelated changes. Then I ask an eng if it seems good (after merge).
Can someone help me understand how shipping 100s PRs a day makes sense? Why do you need to ship so many PRs in the first place? I might just not be AI-pilled enough to understand the need for it yet, so I’m genuinely trying to understand it.

The thing that may be hard to understand about Silicon Valley, and especially engineering-driven culture, is that a lot of things are created because somebody wanted to see if they could. There was no vision, no worldview, no problem being solved. On average, the result is unapplied or misapplied novelty, with the occasional useful innovation. What's interesting is that as software gets easier to build, the power to build spreads beyond established institutions, the ones with checks and balances and market forces to filter out random creation. I think we're going to see a future with a lot more unruly software: some of it controversial, thoughtless, or dangerous, and some of it genuinely special, curious, and creative. But we'll probably overestimate the impact of any individual thing. Distribution is harder than ever, and even what does get distributed well will have plenty of determined peers.
