New pub alert! Zhongwei Li and @hesmondthing David Hesmondhalgh’s article traces the history of Chinese music platforms by considering platformization as a closing down of the open and generative potential of internet architecture.🎵

The sentences handed to the five @JustStop_Oil campaigners are utterly disproportionate. Four and five years in prison for peaceful protest? This is what you might expect in Russia or Egypt, not in a supposed democracy. theguardian.com/environment/…
So proud of my sister and her husband Ian Kershaw for their role (alongside others) in the brilliant and successful campaign to save the Oldham Coliseum Theatre

Labour's share of the popular vote is way lower than that achieved by Corbyn Labour in 2017 and only 2% more than 2019:
2010: Tories 36.1, Labour 29.0
2015: Tories 36.9, Labour 30.4
2017: Tories 42.4, Labour 40.0
2019: Tories 43.6, Labour 32.1
2024: Labour 34.1, Tories 23.6
Feeling guilty because my daughter @RosaHes1 has been reduced to working as a maid for some kind of aristocrat (Lady Penelope or something) and is involved in some scheme for Penelope to get off with a posh fella called Colin.

My colleague Zhongwei (Mabu) Li and I have just published this open-access article, a history of digital music in China from peer to peer to streaming, and an account of what this might tell us about platformisation in China: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

👉NEW -- For western media, Israel’s bombing of Gaza is not ‘deadly’
by Prof. Des Freedman (@lazebnic)
Right across the Anglo-American mainstream media, the killing of Palestinians is seen as normal. It’s only Israeli lives that matter.

Obviously Trump is going to win the Republican nomination. So why is his predictable victory in the absurd "Iowa caucus" headline news today? Can't news organisations just stop covering the US Presidential Election until early November? Tell me the result when this farce is over.
Surreal for me and my co-author @hyojungsun to be alongside @nilerodgers and @MMercuriadis, giving evidence to the UK Parliament Culture, Media and Sport Committee, on "creator remuneration" in music.
The Belgian film Close (2022) is such a beautiful and moving exploration of adolescent masculinity - and homophobia, centred on two 13 year old boys. The acting of the schoolchildren and parents is extraordinary. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Not much has been published on how the Indian music industries are changing in the platform era. I co-authored this piece with Charles Umney and our PhD student @adlal Aditya led the writing of this, his first peer-reviewed article, with great aplomb.
Happy to share that a new article, in collaboration with my supervisors @hesmondthing and Dr. Charles Umney, where we explore the impact of platformisation on the livelihood of Indian musicians, is out in the world!
